Lehigh falls short in overtime against Colgate, 10-9

BETHLETHEM, Pa. - A goal by Colgate midfielder Amanda O'Sullivan in the second overtime period was the difference as the Lehigh women's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 final Saturday at a snowy Ulrich Sports Complex. With the tough loss, the Mountain Hawk fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in Patriot League play while the Raiders improve to 4-4 and 2-0 in the league.
“We couldn't get the draw control in overtime, but we had some excellent stops at the end of the game,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “By the time we got the ball, we needed to tie it. We made some stress mistakes late in the game, so that was unfortunate.”
Freshman Kendall Garden and senior Julie McBrien scored exactly one minute apart to give Lehigh a 2-0 advantage by the 26:42 mark of the first half. Colgate scored three of the next four goals to tie the score at three following an unassisted score from Alison Flood. Lehigh answered right back as sophomore Kelsey Yenco scored off a feed from freshman Megan Paytas midway through the first stanza. O'Sullivan tied the score for the second time, but neither side could score over the final 12:03 as they went into halftime tied at four.
O'Sullivan and Kate Sheridan converted free position opportunities early in the second half to take a 6-4 lead. With Lehigh trailing 7-5, the Mountain Hawks wouldn't back down, getting consecutive goals from freshman Nicole Isdaner and McBrien to pull even at seven. The teams traded the final four goals of regulation, as McBrien tied the score at eight before Paytas scored off a Carli Sukonik feed to make it 9-9.
The contest remained tied at nine for the final 10:43 of regulation and the first overtime. Less than a minute into the second overtime period, O'Sullivan brought the ball from behind the net and fired an unassisted goal past junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick, which proved to be the difference. The Mountain Hawks were unable to get a quality shot off in the final minute as Colgate came home with the victory.
Paytas led the way with her first-career hat trick to go along with an assist. McBrien also scored three goals in the loss. O'Sullivan finished with five goals for Colgate while Sheridan posted four points (two goals, two assists). Fitzpatrick made 11 saves in net for Lehigh across Colgate's Jennie Berglin, who made four stops.
Final shots were 27-16 in favor of Colgate while the Raiders held a 12-11 edge in groundballs and 14-9 advantage in draw controls.
“We have such a difficult schedule with a very young team and I think we made progress in a variety of areas,” Redfern said. “It's unfortunate not to get the win and be rewarded, but we're going to stay the course.”
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday as part of a lacrosse doubleheader at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh hosts Fairfield at 3 p.m. prior to the Lehigh men's team facing UMass at 6 p.m.
