GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Lehigh baseball team's six-game winning streak was snapped by North Carolina A&T, as the Mountain Hawks fell to the Aggies 17-8 on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium.
“We just didn't play well fundamentally,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “Every aspect of our game just wasn't sharp and we didn't execute.”
Lehigh had built a 5-2 lead after two innings with a two-run single by junior Joe Abeln in the first and senior Casey Turner's single in the second. The Mountain Hawks also capitalized on three Aggies errors in the second frame, as freshman Mike Garzillo scored from second on an error by center fielder Bo McMillan after reaching base with a walk.
The Aggies scored in each of the first four innings to keep the game close, but Lehigh rallied behind another Turner single and a two-out RBI hit from junior Tyler Brong down the left field line to increase the lead to 8-4. NC A&T tied the score at eight in the fifth with a series of at bats that included an RBI double by Dairio Little and a sacrifice fly from McMillan. A pair of walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch loaded the bases for the Aggies in the seventh with Luke Tendler coming up to bat. Tendler hit a grand slam off senior Steven Ball that broke the game open and ended Lehigh's winning streak.
The Brown and White will play three games against Mount St. Mary's, including a single game at 3:30 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader that begins at noon Saturday in Emmitsburg, Md. The team will return to Goodman Campus for its home opener against Temple on Tuesday.
