PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team fell into an early hole, but bounced back to play Temple even in the second half as the Mountain Hawks (1-1) fell 14-7 on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (3-0) took a 7-0 halftime lead, but Lehigh wouldn't quit, pulling as close as five in the second. Freshman Kris Abens and sophomore Carli Sukonik led the way with two goals apiece.
“First half turnovers and poor shot selection was too much to overcome against a quality opponent today,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “Lauren Willcox, Kelly Scott and Kris Abens had strong performances for us.”
Within three midway through the first half, Temple scored three goals in the span of 4:39 to take a commanding 6-0 advantage. Senior Julie McBrien got Lehigh on the board 3:07 into the second. Down 10-2 with 17:06 on the clock, the Mountain Hawks scored four of the next five goals, including both of Sukonik's, to pull within 11-6 with 6:47 still on the clock. Temple answered, however, to erase any doubt before Abens rounded out the scoring with her second of the day with 2:08 left in the game.
Junior Chelsea Retaleato and sophomore Kelsey Yenco added Lehigh's other goals on the afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks held a 14-8 second-half edge in shots to pull even at 22 for the game. Temple held the edge in groundballs (15-13) while the Mountain Hawks held a commanding 15-8 advantage in draw controls. Junior goalie Alexandra Fitzpatrick finished with six saves, before being relieved by senior MaryLeah A trio of Temple goalkeepers combined for nine stops.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Binghamton to face the Bearcats. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. Lehigh will then return home on Tuesday, Mar. 5 to welcome Delaware at 4 p.m.
