BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Off a huge win at American, the Lehigh women's basketball team will look to make it two in-a-row when it hosts Colgate in the team's Play 4 Kay night in an effort to raise funds, education, support and prevention of female cancers. All fans are encouraged to wear pink and $1.00 will be donated towards the cause for every fan in attendance for the 7 p.m. tip.
The Mountain Hawks will look to build momentum down the final stretch of the season when they search for the series sweep against Colgate on Saturday. Lehigh beat the Raiders in Hamilton, N.Y. 70-62 on January 19 behind a season-high 18 points from junior Hilary Weaver for what was its fourth consecutive road victory.
The Mountain Hawks will now be in search of the 15th victory out of the last 16 meetings against the Raiders. Weaver's season-high of 18 at Colgate came on 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc and a 6-of-9 effort from the field, while Kinek matched her 18, going 8-of-15 from the field.
On Wednesday, Lehigh took a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game and never relinquished it as the Mountain Hawks dominated American, 71-55, behind two double-doubles from senior Becky Guman and freshman Kerry Kinek. Guman and Kinek each turned in 20 points and 11 boards to pace the Mountain Hawks to their first victory since knocking off the Raiders on January 19.
It was Guman's first-career double-double as she went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while Kinek shot 9-of-15 from the field for her second straight game eclipsing the 20-point mark. The last time Lehigh had two players earn a double-double in the same game was on December 7, 2011 when Alexa Williams and Emily Gratch combined for 25 points and 23 rebounds in a 61-37 win over NJIT. The performance was also the first time Lehigh had two 20+ point scorers in a game since February 11, 2012 when Alexa Williams scored 27 and Emily Gratch had 22 in a 77-71 loss to Colgate.
Lehigh enters Saturday with a 32-22 all-time advantage over the Raiders including 14 of the last 15 encounters. Lehigh shot a blistering 59 percent from the field in the first half of the first meeting and protected its 16-point halftime lead (38-22) for the eight-point victory.
The Raiders picked up their first league win of the season on Wednesday against Bucknell, knocking off the Bison 58-51 behind four double figure performances. Freshman Josie Stockill led the way with 14, as the Raiders ended an eight-game league losing streak to begin their Patriot League slate. Colgate entered halftime with the lead for the first time in 32 days and ended the game with a 28-0 advantage in bench points.
The Raiders are led by Jhazmine Lynch who is averaging 9.0 ppg. After her 14 points against Bucknell, Stockill is now averaging 7.0 ppg as the team's third leading scorer. Kelly Reid is the leading rebounder, averaging 5.5 boards per contest, while sophomores Missy Repoli and Mariah Jones have each knocked down 30 treys this season as the co-leaders of the team.
As a team, the Raiders are the best free throw shooting squad in the Patriot League, collectively shooting 72.4 percent from the line, led by Jones who is shooting 82.5 percent and ranks third among Patriot League opponents. Colgate is also the best among Patriot League teams in defending the three-point shots, holding opponents to just 26.7 percent from beyond the arc on the season.
After Saturday's showdown with Colgate, the Mountain Hawks will be back on the road as they will travel to Sojka Pavilion to face the Bucknell Bison at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23.
