BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh men's and women's track and field team begin a season-long hunt for a Patriot League Championship when the Mountain Hawks host the Fast Times Before Finals meet on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at Rauch Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks will host seven other schools in the season-opening event that is set to start at 5 p.m. on Friday and resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Â
"Preseason training went well and we've been able to start acclimating the freshmen," said head coach Matt Utesch. "This meet will be a great chance for everyone to take what they've rehearsed in practice and really put it to the test in a competition atmosphere."
Â
Lehigh will host rival Lafayette in addition to Penn, Moravian, Millersville (women only), East Stroudsburg, DeSales and The College of New Jersey in the unscored meet.
Â
The Mountain Hawk men aim to improve on their fourth place finish at last year's Indoor Patriot League Championships, while the women hope to better their third place finish. To do so, Utesch knows his squad will need to replace a talented group of graduated seniors.
Â
"It's always hard to replace graduated athletes, but our leadership academy does such a great job at developing our kids' abilities," said Utesch. "We have kids that have been through the academy and are in a good position to step in and take over."
Â
The men will be captained by seniors Patrick Ciez and John Ciavardelli, along with two members of the cross country team. Seniors Tyler Mueller and Jimmy Miller handled captain duties last year and are returning runners this season. The captains have established successful careers as Mountain Hawks, with Ciez being named second-team All-Patriot League a season ago and Ciavardelli earning a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League squad.
Â
The Mountain Hawks welcome a class of 12 freshmen onto the men's team this year. The newcomers will be joined by 13 sophomores, 17 juniors and 12 seniors.
Â
"The freshmen have done very well athletically through preseason," said Utesch. "They fit right in. We're fortunate that we have a lot of time to train them and work with them leading into the season."
Â
The women's squad will be captained by seniors Brooke Astor, Marissa Galante and Katherine Howley, along with junior Halie Carter. Astor served as a captain on last year's squad, while Galante and Howley were the leaders of this season's women's cross country team.
Â
"Brooke takes care of all of the small details that allow her to be the superstar that she is and everyone on the team really respects her," said Utesch. "Hailey really understands the role that she's stepping into and she's going to do a great job of stepping up. The cross country girls had a phenomenal season, so we're excited to have them join us full time."
Â
The women welcome a large group of 22 freshmen to the team this year. Lehigh also returns nine sophomores, 13 juniors, 13 seniors and one graduate student.
Â
"We have such a huge freshmen class that it's a bit difficult to get everyone on the same page," said Utesch. "Everyone has a giant learning curve and it takes time, but we have to make sure that they all understand our goals as a team and what is requested of them as representatives of the university."
Â
Both the men and women will return a balanced squad that will be tough competition in multi events, jumps, throws, sprints and distance.
Â
Senior Ryan Paquin will lead the Mountain Hawk men in the multi events. Paquin claimed a Patriot League title in last year's outdoor decathlon after claiming third in the indoor heptathlon.
Â
Astor leads the women in the multi events and looks to continue her storied career in her final season at Lehigh. The senior has won four separate Patriot League titles, including the 100 meter hurdles and heptathlon in 2013. She also holds the school record in the heptathlon and the 60 meter hurdles. Her efforts at last year's indoor Patriot League Championship earned her women's Field Athlete of the Meet honors.
Â
Senior Benjamin Beauchamp leads the charge in the throws for the Mountain Hawk men. The electrical engineering major was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team last season and competed in the weight throw and shot put at the Patriot League Championships a season ago.
Â
Senior Jimil Ataman will spearhead the women throwers. Ataman competed in the hammer throw at the first round of NCAA Championships during last year's outdoor season after placing seventh in the event at the ECAC Championships to earn All-East honors. The history and anthropology major was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League team and holds the school record in the outdoor hammer throw. The Mountain Hawks will be without graduated senior E'lana Lemon who joined Ataman at last year's NCAA Championships.
Â
The men's jumps will be spearheaded by Ciez, a two-time Patriot League Champion in the high jump, and junior Adeolu Adesida. The duo finished first and second at last season's outdoor Patriot League Championships to each earn a bid to the first round of NCAA Championships.
Â
Six of Lehigh's 11 female athletes that will compete in the jumps are freshmen. The Mountain Hawk jumpers will rely on leadership from junior Serenah Polite who placed second and third in the long and triple jump, respectively, at last season's outdoor Patriot League Championships.
Â
The men will be without graduated senior Devin Monroe, but return a strong core of sprinters into the 2013-14 campaign. Senior Martin Otieno holds the school record in both the indoor 200 and indoor 4x400 meter relay. Otieno was joined on the record-setting 4x400 team by juniors Justin Mahoney and Christopher Watson, who both hope to continue their successful Lehigh careers this season.
Â
On the women's side, Carter looks to lead a young sprinting squad after the departure of a strong senior class. Carter placed eighth in the 100 meter dash and was a member of the fifth place 4x100 and second place 4x400 meter relay teams at last year's outdoor Patriot League Championships. The junior was also a member of the eighth place distance medley relay team at the 2013 indoor ECAC Championships.
Â
Mountain Hawk cross country runners will look to build upon their already successful fall on the distance side of the track this season. Mueller leads the men after becoming Lehigh's first-ever individual Patriot League Champion and finishing 67th at the NCAA Championship race. Mueller holds the school record in the outdoor 10,000 meter and will look to continue his standout senior year in the Rauch Fieldhouse. The women secured their best finish in over a decade at the Patriot League Championships. The second-place Mountain Hawk team was led by sophomore Jennifer Markham who finished in fourth place in the 6K race. The chemical engineering major was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in addition to her first team All-Patriot League recognition. The Mountain Hawks will also look to two other consistent performers, junior Ingrid Simon and graduate student Rosie Roessel, to lead the distance squad.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return talented athletes in every area and are excited about the prospect of competing for a championship.
Â
"Our biggest strength is our balance," said Utesch. "We have top-notch kids in every event, so our ability to finish high in all aspects will lead to success."
