2014 Schedule
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the season opener set for Feb. 21, head coach Sean Leary has announced his 2014 Lehigh baseball schedule that will begin with a trip to North Carolina. The Mountain Hawks aim to build upon their 2013 season with by challenging a slew of talented competitors and earning a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
"I'm very excited about the schedule," said Leary. "The pre-Patriot League portion of the schedule will definitely have us prepared for league play."
The team will play in a tournament hosted by Davidson to begin the season from Feb. 21-23, and will feature contests against Fairleigh Dickinson and Mount St. Mary's. The tournament will be an early test for the Mountain Hawks, as the teams from the Southern and Northeast Conferences will present a variety of different strengths.
Following the trip to North Carolina, the Mountain Hawks will return north to face Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. on Feb. 26. The Big East team finished last season with an impressive 37-19 record that led them to a championship game appearance where the Pirates eventually fell to Pittsburgh in 12 innings.
Lehigh will have a busy spring break, as the team will head to Davenport, Fla. to compete in a tournament with teams that have yet to be determined from March 1-3. After the three day tournament, the Mountain hawks will head to DeLand, Fla. to face Maine in a pair of neutral site games. The Black Bears had two players drafted in last June's MLB draft after finishing 37-22 a season ago.
"Our team will see some strong pitching during our first few weekend series and our spring break will definitely feature some front-line arms as well," said Leary. "Our goal is to challenge our hitters and pitchers early so that when we begin our league portion of the schedule, we will be ready for the quality of the competition."
The Mountain Hawks will play their home opener when they welcome Coppin State for a three game series, beginning with a doubleheader on March 8. The Mountain Hawks will then host neighbor Muhlenberg on March 11 in a 2 p.m. contest.
Lehigh will hit the road once again when the Mountain Hawks head to Hackensack, N.J. to compete in the Fairleigh Dickinson Round Robin Tournament from March 15-16. In addition to meeting the host Knights for the second time, the Mountain Hawks will also take on NJIT. The Highlanders had two pitchers chosen in last summer's draft.
The Mountain Hawks will make a stop in Philadelphia to face Temple on March 18 before returning home to host Mount St. Mary's in a three-game slate, beginning with a doubleheader on March 22.
Following the series with the Mount, Lehigh will partake in the Liberty Bell Classic in Philadelphia. The Mountain Hawks start the tournament with a game against La Salle on March 25 and then will face either Temple or Delaware on April 1.
After the first game of the Liberty Bell Classic against La Salle, the Mountain Hawks will begin Patriot League play on the road against Army. Each Patriot League series will feature four contests comprised of two doubleheaders. The Mountain Hawks finished 5-15 in the league last season.
"The biggest challenge will be the amount of travel and away games," said Leary. "We'll play 12 of our 20 league games on the road. I believe our extensive road schedule early in the season will go a long way to prepare our team mentally for the challenges of playing on the road against strong competition."
The first league series will be a tough away matchup, as Lehigh will take on defending Patriot League champion Army on March 29-30. The Black Knights finished 11-9 in the league last season and defeated Navy and Holy Cross en route to claiming a title. The Mountain Hawks continue their league road stretch when they head to Lewisburg on April 5-6. The Bison finished .500 in league play last year with a 10-10 mark.
Lehigh hosts its first Patriot League series on April 12-13 when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Crusaders. Holy Cross won the regular season championship in 2013 with a record of 15-5, but fell to Army in the championship series.
The Mountain Hawks will host UMES in a doubleheader on April 15 before heading to Annapolis to start a four-game set with Navy on April 19-20. The Mids finished 13-7 in 2013 en route to a league tournament appearance.
Two more non-league tilts will serve as a tune-up when Lehigh heads to Coppin State and hosts Seton Hall on April 22-23.
The Mountain Hawks will host their final series of the season against archrival Lafayette on April 26-27. The foes split the series in 2013, but the Mountain Hawks will look to rebound in two doubleheaders on the Goodman Campus in 2014.
"We have experienced seniors, so we will lean of them to help guide our talented underclassmen," said Leary. "They will be asked to mentor and prepare this group for the challenges that our travel presents as well as the challenges our unique four-game league weekend format presents. Their leadership will strongly dictate our success this spring."
