BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team will host Villanova Thursday inside Stabler Arena for the fourth annual Education Day game, presented by Wells Fargo. Over 3,600 school children will be in attendance and will have the opportunity to participate in educational activities surrounding a Division I women's basketball game. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
Lehigh and Villanova will meet for the seventh time in program history, as the Mountain Hawks aim to claim just their second win over the Wildcats. Three of the past five meetings between the teams have gone into overtime, with Villanova claiming victories in each.
The teams most recently met last season with the Wildcats claiming a 66-49 win. Lehigh ended the first half on an 11-0 run to trim Villanova's lead to just 11, but the Wildcats used an 11-4 run to open a 19-point lead that the Mountain Hawks could never recover from.
The Mountain Hawks shot 39.6 percent from the field for the game and 44.4 percent from three-point land, but 10 treys by the Wildcats proved to be the factor in Villanova's win. Sarah Williams finished the game with a team-best 14 points after a 13-point first half outburst. Kerry Kinek narrowly missed a double-double as she ended with 10 points and nine rebounds.
In their most recent game, the Mountain Hawks erased a ten point second-half deficit to rally and defeat NJIT 77-72 Monday night inside Stabler Arena in the 2013-14 home opener. The Mountain Hawks improved to 8-0 all-time against the Highlanders and claimed their second win to start 2-0 for the first time since the 1990-00 season.
Four Mountain Hawks scored in double-figures to lift the Lehigh past the Highlanders. Kinek led the charge with 20 points and 12 rebounds, to mark the second straight game that she's scored 20-plus points. Junior Katie O'Reilly followed with 15 points, while junior Sarah Williams and freshman Lexi Martins each chipped in ten.
Lehigh's hot start to the season earned two players Patriot League honors, as freshman guard Kayla Burton picked up the Rookie of the Week award and Kinek earned honorable mention recognition. Burton will be squaring off against her sister, Kendall, on Thursday, who is a redshirt sophomore guard in Villanova's starting five.
The Wildcats will also be looking for their third win of the season as the battle of 2-0 teams takes place inside Stabler Arena Thursday. In its first two games of the season, Villanova defeated Drexel and Mississippi Valley State to win the Toledo Glass City Tournament.
The game against the Dragons was the closer contest of the two, but Villanova led for the entire game with the exception of the first basket scored. The Wildcats made 26 three-point field goals in their first two games, while committing just 14 turnovers.
The Wildcats have three players who have averaged double-digit points through the first two games of the season. Junior Emily Leer leads the Wildcats with 15.0 point and 4.5 rebounds per game. Junior Lauren Burford has tallied 11.0 points per game, while senior Devon Kane has notched 10.0. Sophomore Kavunaa Edwards leads the team with an average of 8.0 rebounds per game.
Villanova finished 21-11 last season and earned an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament where the Wildcats fell to Michigan in the first round, 60-52. Villanova was picked to finish fourth in this year's preseason Big East poll behind DePaul, Creighton and St. John's.
Following Thursday's game, the Mountain Hawks will remain home to host Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The game will air for free on the Patriot League Network.
