BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 14/17 Lehigh returns to New York City for the second straight week, looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season as the Mountain Hawks battle Columbia Saturday in a game that will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. The Mountain Hawks gave up 630 yards in a 52-34 loss to Fordham last weekend in the Bronx as the Rams took advantage of two third quarter Lehigh turnovers to turn a three point lead into a 24 point cushion.
Â
Quarterback Brandon Bialkowski and wide receiver Lee Kurfis both had strong statistical days, as they eclipsed the 300 yard passing and 100 yard receiving marks, respectively for the fifth straight week.
Â
Columbia has dropped its first three games this season, including a 53-7 setback at Princeton last week in the Lions' Ivy League opener. The Lions have also lost to Fordham and Monmouth, two other teams that Lehigh has already faced in 2013.
          Â
Lehigh saw several noteworthy streaks come to an end with last week's loss at Fordham. The Mountain Hawks' 16 game regular season road winning streak came to a halt as Lehigh suffered its first regular season road loss since a 31-10 setback at New Hampshire in 2010. Lehigh also saw its five game winning streak over Fordham come to an end as well as its five year streak of winning its Patriot League opener. The Mountain Hawks are now 6-2 in Patriot League openers under Andy Coen with both losses coming at the hands of Fordham (2007 and 2013).
Â
In its last three games, Lehigh's offense has relied less on the big play and more on long sustained drives. The Mountain Hawks have had 16 scoring drives over their last three games with those drives having consisted of an average of 11 plays. Four of Lehigh's five scoring drives against Princeton featured 11 or more plays, while against New Hampshire the Mountain Hawks posted points with scoring drives of 18 and 17 yards among others. Against Fordham, Lehigh's five scoring drives consisted of 10, 10, 10, 10 and 11 plays.
Â
The Mountain Hawks have led the Patriot League in sacks in each of the last four seasons, and led the FCS in sacks in 2009. Last year Lehigh tallied 34 sacks, good for sixth nationally in sacks per game. This season, Lehigh has totaled just six sacks through five games, with three coming against New Hampshire. The Mountain Hawks recorded just one sack against Fordham, with junior Tim Newton and senior Rickey Layton sharing the honor.
Â
Lehigh and Columbia will meet for the 18th time Saturday. The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series 11-5-1 and are unbeaten in the last nine meetings with the Lions. Lehigh and Columbia have met nice times since 1987 with the Brown and White winning eight of those games. The 1994 contest ended in a 28-28 tie, the last tie on Lehigh's record. Columbia's last win was by a 42-21 score in 1963. Lehigh and Columbia met for the first time in 1889 with Lehigh prevailing 51-6. The teams did not meet again until 1932. The Mountain Hawks and Lions are meeting in New York for the first time since 1998.
Â
Saturday's game kicks off just after noon from Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium in New York. The game will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network (Service Electric Dial Position 93 and DirecTV channel 220). Audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320, ESPNLV.com and Lehighsports.com, with pregame coverage beginning at 11 a.m.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will then return home to face Georgetown on Family Day at Goodman Stadium, October 19 at 12:30 p.m.
