BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team will host Patriot League newcomer Loyola on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex for the first-ever meeting between the programs. Both teams will be searching for their first Patriot League win in a game that marks the halfway point of league play.
Former Lehigh men's soccer and men's lacrosse head coach John McCloskey will be honored during halftime of Saturday's contest. McCloskey spent 1984-1991 with the Mountain Hawk soccer team, and during his time coached one All-American and 13 NSCAA All-Middle Atlantic players, as well as four All-Patriot League players through just the first two years of Patriot League play. McCloskey also spent 16 seasons with the Lehigh men's lacrosse team where he coached three All-Americans and 40 All-Patriot League players.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 1-0 loss at Villanova on Tuesday. Lehigh controlled the ball for much of the game, but the Wildcats were able to capitalize on a penalty kick opportunity in the 59th minute. Lehigh recorded 13 shots, three of which came off the foot of freshman Gianfranco Giammatteo. The match marked the second time in three games that the Mountain Hawks have lost a 1-0 game by way of penalty kick.
Senior Ben Wysocki and freshman Danny Gonzalez have each scored a goal for Lehigh this season, while Wysocki has also notched an assist. Senior James Meyerkord and junior Brian Suchoski lead the team with seven shots on goal, while Meyerkord has also recorded a team-leading 22 shots. Freshman Jacob Gottwald has started the last five games in goal for the Mountain Hawks and has accumulated a save percentage of.667.
The Greyhounds will enter Saturday's game after being shutout for two straight games by way of a 2-0 loss at Bucknell and a 1-0 loss to Army. Loyola will carry a 5-5-2 overall record and 0-3-1 league mark into the game. In their most recent matchup, the Greyhounds lost a tough showdown with Army thanks to a Black Knight penalty kick in the 36th minute.
Loyola has yet to capture a victory in its first season as a Patriot League member, but many of the Greyhound players find themselves atop the leaderboards. Larry Ndjock leads the league in goals, game-winning goals and points, with eight, four and 16, respectively. Stephen Dooley finds himself in first place with six assists, while keeper Zach Kane's 5.29 saves per game also leads the league.
A live broadcast of the matchup will be available for free via the Patriot League Network, as well as live stats.
Following Saturday night's game, the Mountain Hawks will remain home to host their final non-league tilt of the season when Stony Brook visits Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
