BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed success at Navy Day on the Schuylkill River Saturday. The Mountain Hawks were successful against some of the region's top crews as the squad continues to gain race experience heading into the spring season.

"In comparison to faster teams that we raced today, I think we did exactly what we set out to do," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We raced aggressively and learned where we are compared to other teams. I feel very confident we're headed in the right direction."

Navy Day was created to celebrate the birthday of the U.S. Navy. The event is hosted by a local team or the Schuylkill Navy, the governing body of the Schuylkill River and boat clubs (which have no ties to the federal government). It covers 2.5 miles of the river with the crews racing in a time trial format.

The Women's Varsity Eight finished 13th out of 21 crews while Lehigh's "B" boat, competing in its second race of the day, finished 20th. The Men's Varsity Eight placed 22nd of 32.

Several Lehigh athletes competed in multiple races on Saturday.

"In the long term, by double racing, it helps them learn how to make adjustments within a race," said Conley. "A lot of times, when you race an individual race, there will be a mistake that happens that you wish you could fix. We're teaching them how to fix these mistakes on the race course."

In the Men's Collegiate Four, one crew came in eighth, another in ninth and a third in 18th (out of 22). The Women's Collegiate Four enjoyed similar success, with one boat placing eighth and another 18th. For Lehigh's complete results from Saturday, please see below.

"I think top to bottom it was a very solid effort," said Conley. "Both varsity eights stepped up in their respective races. They double raced after racing in the fours first. Placing in the top eight is huge. They came out in the varsity eight and performed well against crews who were fresh and didn't race earlier."

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Nov. 9 when they compete in the Rutgers Fall Classic. Only Lehigh alumni will row in the Head of the Charles next weekend.
