BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 13/10 Lehigh heads to the Bronx to face its second nationally ranked opponent in as many weeks as the Mountain Hawks visit No. 12/13 Fordham in a nationally televised battle of undefeated Patriot League teams Saturday at Jack Coffey Field. The Mountain Hawks moved to 4-0 with a 34-27 win over New Hampshire last week at Goodman Stadium. Quarterback Brandon Bialkowski had another stellar day, throwing for 359 yards and two touchdowns as Lehigh rallied from a 16 point second quarter deficit to beat UNH for the first time since 1982.
Fordham has won its first five games this season, highlighted by victories over Villanova and FBS member Temple. The Rams and their high scoring offense moved to 5-0 with a 38-20 win at Saint Francis (Pa.) last weekend.
Bialkowski earned his second consecutive Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday for his efforts in Lehigh's win over New Hampshire. Bialkowski completed 31-of-52 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns. A week prior against Princeton, he completed a Lehigh single-game record 42 passes (in 57 attempts) for 430 yards and two touchdowns. The 430 yard effort marked the sixth-highest single game total in school history.
For the season, the Arizona native has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,530 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He is ranked in the top five in the FCS in passing yards (total and per game), total offense and completions per game. Bialkowski has thrown for 300-plus yards in all four games this season, the longest streak for a Lehigh quarterback since Chris Lum eclipsed the 300 yard mark in the first seven games in 2011.
In its last two wins, Lehigh's offense has relied less on the big play and more on long sustained drives. The Mountain Hawks have had 11 scoring drives over their last two games with those drives having consisted of an average of 11.3 plays. Four of Lehigh's five scoring drives against Princeton featured 11 or more plays, while against New Hampshire the Mountain Hawks posted points with scoring drives of 18 and 17 yards. Lehigh also won the time of possession battle in each of its last two games after losing the possession battle in its first two wins.
Lehigh has played Fordham 25 previous times with the Mountain Hawks winning 23 of those meetings. Lehigh has won the last five meetings, including a last second 34-31 win at Goodman Stadium last year. Fordham snapped a nine-game Lehigh winning streak in the series with a win in 2007. These two teams met for the first time in 1923 then did not meet again until 1989.
