BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's team will look to bounce back from a pair of losses last weekend when it travels to Monmouth Friday for a 7 p.m. game against the Hawks. The Mountain Hawks are looking for their first goal, and win, of the 2012 season after holding the edge in most statistical categories last time out at Binghamton.
Lehigh suffered two 4-0 road losses last weekend, falling to both Providence and Binghamton. The Friars were able to score a quick goal on the Mountain Hawks just 4:25 into the game and never looked back, adding one more in the first half and two in the second to cruise to a victory. Lehigh registered two shots on goal in the defeat, but was unable to find the net.
Despite falling to Binghamton Sunday, Lehigh recorded a 9-8 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lehigh held the Bearcats to just one goal until the 58-minute mark, but Binghamton scored three goals in the next 27:24 to put the game out of reach.
Lehigh has yet to score a goal this season, but sophomore Darby Wiegand and junior Paige Dyrek lead the team with four shots and two shots on goal apiece. Sophomore Ashley Blanks has played 225:00 in net, making 20 saves, while freshman Ani Nahapetian has a save against Binghamton in 45:00 of action.
Monmouth owns a 1-4 record so far in 2012, coming off three straight road defeats. The Hawks are 1-1 at home, with their victory coming on Aug. 24 against Saint Peter's. Lehigh and Monmouth have one common opponent, as both teams have lost to Seton Hall. Lehigh fell 2-0 to the Pirates in its season opener, and Monmouth lost 3-0 on the road.
Monmouth's offense is led by junior forward Dana Costello, who has recorded three of the team's five goals. Classmate Monique Plescia and freshman Monique Gonclaves have each chipped in with a goal apiece. Two goalkeepers have seen time so far for the Hawks. Senior Ashley Lewis has played 135:00 in net and holds a 2.00 goals against average while sophomore Jocelyn McCoy has posted a 2.86 goals against average in her 315:00.
Lehigh holds a 3-7-1 all-time record against Monmouth, the most recent meeting resulting in a 2-1 home loss a season ago. The first ever meeting between the two sides was a 5-3 Monmouth win in 1992.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Friday (Sept. 14) when they return home to host Marist at 7 p.m. That precedes a Sunday game at Stony Brook.
