Mountain Hawks announce 2012 team awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team recently announced its 2012 awards following a strong campaign highlighted by a midseason stretch when it won five-of-seven games. Senior Leigh Ann Torcivia was named Athlete of the Year while juniors Julie McBrien and MaryLeah DiNisco earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Coaches Award, respectively.
Torcivia garnered her second straight team award after earning Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season. A four-time All-Patriot League member, Torcivia was a Second Team honoree as a freshman before earning a spot on the First Team each of the last three years. The senior captain finished the season with 44 points via 24 goals and a team-leading 20 assists while also posting 36 groundballs, 37 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers. Torcivia has won five-career Patriot League weekly awards, including two this season (Defensive and Midfield Player of the Week).
McBrien was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in posting a strong 3.46 cumulative grade point average as a Finance major. A steady member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, McBrien has won the Faculty Athletics Council Award while cracking the Dean's List numerous semesters. On the field, McBrien has impressed at the midfield, earning First Team All-Patriot League, her second-career All-League honor after being named to the Second Team as a freshman. The junior captain scored 24 goals and added 12 assists, good for second on the team in both categories; her 36 points stood third. McBrien posted 18 groundballs, 27 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers, earning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors on Mar. 3.
The Coaches Award, presented to DiNisco, is awarded to the individual who made significant contribution to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement or special leadership. DiNisco stepped in for an injured Alex Fitzpatrick and put forth a strong season, finishing with 89 saves in 13 games (10 starts). One highlight came in the season finale vs. Navy when she made a season-high 12 saves. DiNisco also made 11 stops against New Hampshire and 10 vs. Bucknell. She earned wins against Binghamton, Bucknell, Lafayette, Villanova and New Hampshire.
