BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding nine straight victories and the most wins in the nation, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team remained #7 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll released Monday. In addition, junior defenseman Mike Noone was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week while freshman attackman Patrick Corbett garnered Rookie of the Week laurels, marking the fifth straight week at least one Lehigh player has earned a weekly award.
After falling down 4-1 early in the second quarter Friday, the Mountain Hawks held #19 Navy scoreless over the game's final 42:02 in yet another dominant effort. Lehigh stood pat at #7 in the rankings, with only one team ahead of it losing (#1 Johns Hopkins to North Carolina Sunday night). The Tar Heels jumped all the way to ninth in both polls; Lehigh handed UNC its first loss of the season back on Mar. 3.
Noone earned his second straight Defensive Player of the Week honor, posting a career-high five groundballs while tying a career-high three caused turnovers. He held Sam Jones and Taylor Reynolds without a point (Reynolds' one goal came in the first half when Noone wasn't covering him). Jones and Reynolds entered Friday second and third on the team in points (24 and 17, respectively).
Overall, Noone spearheaded a Lehigh defense which allowed zero even strength goals over the game's final 54:04 and only one overall (an extra-man goal in the second quarter). The Mountain Hawks shut-out the Midshipmen for the game's final 42:02, the third time this season Lehigh has held an opponent scoreless for 40 or more minutes. The Mountain Hawks own a shutout streak of at least 18 minutes in all 10 victories this season, owning 10 separate shutout streaks exceeding 20.
On Friday, Noone and the defense held Navy to only seven second-half shots (only two on goal), allowing the offense to score eight unanswered. The squad also held the nation's second-leading point-getter Tucker Hull to only one goal after he entered with 21 goals and 20 assists over his first eight games. The Mountain Hawks caused eight of Navy's 11 turnovers (three by Noone). For the season, Lehigh has allowed five goals or fewer in seven games, and has allowed only 43 goals over its 10 wins.
While Noone was leading the defense, Corbett was doing the same offensively to earn his first-career Patriot League weekly award and Lehigh's second Rookie of the Week honor this season (Poillon won the first on Mar. 19). Corbett posted his second-career hat trick Friday, while adding an assist to tie his career-high four points. The Burlington, Ontario native took over the game when it mattered most, with his goals proving as huge momentum swings. He pulled Lehigh within 4-3 late in the first half then tied the score at four on man-up early in the second. Both came on nifty rebounds, scooping groundballs before finding the back of the net.
Corbett helped close out the game in the fourth quarter, scoring at 10:02 then assisting on senior Adam John's goal at 5:52. Corbett also tied a career-high four groundballs and now has 15 on the season. He stands third on the team with 19 points behind 14 goals and five assists. Corbett owns a stellar 56% shooting percentage (14-of-25), by far the best on the team.
Lehigh will head to #17/16 Colgate on Saturday for a big 2 p.m. showdown against the Raiders. The Mountain Hawks return to the Ulrich Sports Complex next Saturday (Apr. 14) against #15/13 Bucknell for the final home game of the regular season. Faceoff for Senior Night is set for 7 p.m.
