BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a week off from race action, the Lehigh rowing team hits the water this weekend when it competes in the Knecht Cup on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The two-day regatta runs on Saturday and Sunday. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a strong performance at the Neuweiler Plate two weekends ago, as the men came in first and the women second.
“This race brings some of the toughest competition of our season together,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “We train to put together races of equal speed on a given weekend because that's what our final race calls for. This regatta gives us a chance to feel what that's like, so we can make adjustments when the championship is on the line.”
“A successful weekend here is beating a crew that we didn't before,” Conley continued. “Every time we can do that, it gets us one step closer to our goals.”
Lehigh's freshmen boats especially impressed at last year's Knecht Cup, led by the Men's Freshmen Eight which advanced to the Petite Finals, falling just shy of qualifying for the Grand Final.
The Neuweiler Plate saw three Lehigh boats post first-place finishes: Men's Varsity Eight, Men's Freshmen Eight and Women's Freshmen Eight. Three other crews placed second.
“This weekend will definitely give us a better understanding of where we are going into the league championship,” said Conley. “I know we've gotten faster, but how much faster will hopefully show on the water this weekend.”
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Apr. 21) when they host the River Cup against archrival Lafayette. The Lehigh women will then compete in the Patriot League Championships the following Sunday (Apr. 29) on the Cooper River.
