Mountain Hawks head to American Saturday for big PL tilt

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding a two-game winning streak, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team will look to improve to 3-1 in Patriot League play when it travels to our nation's capital Saturday for a clash with American. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
Following a big league win over archrival Lafayette, the Mountain Hawks (6-5, 2-1 PL) continued to roll Tuesday, posting a 12-8 win at Villanova. A balanced scoring attack has helped the Mountain Hawks to victories in four of their last five contests. Against the Wildcats, it was freshman Carli Sukonik (three goals, two assists) and junior Julie McBrien (two goals, three assists) who led the way with five points apiece while four others added goals on the night for Lehigh.
Senior Leigh Ann Torcivia posted four points on the evening (two goals, two assists) and continues to lead the Mountain Hawks in scoring with 35 points on the season (21 goals, 14 assists). Sukonik now has 26 goals - a team high - and has added five assists in her rookie campaign. McBrien is third in scoring with 25 points (15 goals, 10 assists) followed by senior Lauren Murray with 22 (17 goals, five assists).
Co-captains McBrien and Torcivia continue to be solid in the midfield, as Torcivia has a team-high 30 groundballs and her 30 draw controls are second only to Sukonik, who owns 35 on the year. McBrien has added 13 groundballs and 20 draw controls while McBrien and Torcivia are tied for the lead in caused turnovers with 11 each.
As a team, the Mountain Hawks have dominated draw controls, winning 64.6 percent and are scoring an 10.45 goals per game.
Junior goalie MaryLeah DiNisco recorded eight saves in the victory. The defense is giving up just 22.00 shots per game, has caused 65 turnovers and holds an 80.8 clearing percentage.
The Eagles, (also 6-5, 2-1 PL) won three straight against Colgate, George Mason and Bucknell before falling to Georgetown on Tuesday. They are averaging an even 14.00 goals per game, led by junior Emily Burton, who has found the back of the net a team-leading 32 times this season. Burton has added six assists for a total of 38 points, also a team high. Classmate Kimberly Collins is second in both goals (21) and points (35). In total, 12 Eagles have recorded at least one point this year. The American defense is backstopped by senior Kaska Komosinski, who carries a 13.56 goals against average, and has made 59 saves on the season.
Last season, the Mountain Hawks downed American, 16-3, in Bethlehem, though overall Lehigh is 4-9 all-time against the Eagles. The teams have traded victories since 2006, with the home team winning each contest over that span.
The Mountain Hawks with host New Hampshire next Saturday, April 7, to begin a four-game homestand to close out the regular season. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
