BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a historic 2012 season, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team is ranked eighth nationally in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Top 20, as released on Monday. The Mountain Hawks stand ahead of lacrosse powers Virginia (9), Denver (10), Colgate (11), UMass (12), Princeton (13) and Syracuse (14) as they look to carry the momentum into 2013.
Defending National Champion Loyola came in first followed by Maryland, Notre Dame, Duke and North Carolina. The Mountain Hawks will face five teams in 2013 ranked by Face-Off magazine - Denver (10), Colgate (11), UMass (12), Penn State (15) and Bucknell (18) - along with Villanova who was ranked 19th by the coaches.
The initial coaches' poll saw the Mountain Hawks come in 13th.
Lehigh finished last season with a 14-3 record, including the program's first Patriot League Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Mountain Hawks hosted eventual National Finalist Maryland in the First Round of NCAAs, falling by only a goal in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
The Mountain Hawks return their top two scorers in seniors David DiMaria and Dante Fantoni who posted 47 and 43 points, respectively. Nearly the entire defensive returns after allowing only 6.81 goals per game last season, led by junior All-American Ty Souders. Sophomore Matt Poillon returns in goal following an All-American freshman campaign when he posted a stellar 6.75 GAA and 59.7 save percentage.
