Mountain Hawks head to the Head of the Schuylkill Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following its season-opening weekend at the Head of the Charles, the Lehigh rowing team will return to action on Saturday at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia. The Mountain Hawks will send a number of crews to the City of Brotherly Love after only two boats raced a week ago. A two-day regatta, all of Lehigh's boats will race on Saturday.
This will mark the first race for a number of crews, including all the freshmen.
“We are trying to get more race experience within a single race,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “The fall is a small stepping stone to the spring and we are looking forward to seeing what can be done.”
Lehigh will have three crews in both the Men's and Women's Open Fours and Freshmen Eights while placing two in the Men's Championship Eights and one in the Women's Championship Eights. For the complete schedule (including times), please see below.
The Mountain Hawks struggled a bit last weekend, but understand it's early in the season and the fall is a tune-up to be at your best in the spring.
“We have put a bigger focus on making sure we are pulling hard every stroke in practice and getting used to the feel of what the boat should feel like when we're at pressure,” said Conley. “I expect the team to be better than we were last week. Again, if we have the attitude and mentality of getting better each day, by the time we get to the spring, we'll be where we want to be.
“The varsity will be racing in fours to start the day and then combining into an eight later in the day,” Conley continued. “It's a tough regatta to double up, but our other focus is on overcoming obstacles. It will be a good day if we stay aggressive.”
Racing in such prestigious events like the Head of the Charles and the Head of the Schuylkill helps the Lehigh Rowing program in a number of ways.
“It has definitely helped us in terms of recruiting and measuring our improvement as a team from year to year,” said Conley. “Placing higher each year tells us a lot about where we are in relation to competition we'll see at the end of the year. So we can make adjustments to what we're doing now to move forward.”
Lehigh will return to action next weekend at the Rutgers Fall Classic before rounding out its fall race schedule at the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday, Nov. 10.
