BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team came up four points short in its season opening meet with West Chester Friday night at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks won seven of 13 events, but a 31-5 edge on the diving boards propelled the visiting Golden Rams to a 122.5-118.5 win.
Freshman Jacob Hassel won two individual events to lead the Mountain Hawks, while classmate Jeff Donovin had a first and a second for Lehigh, which opens at 0-1. West Chester moves to 3-0 on the season.
“The meet was so close,” explained Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “We just didn't have enough divers to pull it out. The men had a great effort to make up a 22-point deficit but fell just short. It was a great team effort on both sides.”
Brant won the 200 back in 1:56.86 with junior Matt Chrzanowski and freshman Matt Carducci taking third and fourth place, respectively.
The freshmen teamed up to give Lehigh 13 more points in the 200 fly as Hassel won in 1:56.02 and Donovin finished second.
Senior Frank Cuzzola captured the 100 free in 47.53 and swam the leadoff leg of Lehigh's 400 free relay team as he teamed with Chrzanowski, Donovin and Karedis for a winning time of 3:10.97, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Sophomore diver Dan Bateman scored five points in the meet, placing fourth in the one meter event and third in the three meter.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday October 27 when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face the Colgate Raiders at 1 p.m.
