HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team picked up its first win of the dual season, downing host Colgate 88-23 Saturday at Lineberry Natatorium. Yale was also on hand competing as an exhibition, but the Mountain Hawks won 10 of the 13 events against the Raiders to even their season record at 1-1.
“This was a good win,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “It took an overall team effort to defeat Colgate and to swim well against a strong Yale team. Good showings by Danny Bennett in the distance events and Demetri Karedis in the sprints really moved things in the right direction.”
Bennett won two individual events against the Raiders, while freshmen also contributed four event wins, including a pair from Jacob Hassel.
Yale posted the top two times in the ensuing 1000 and 200 yard free relay events, but Lehigh kept the pressure on Colgate, sweeping the head-to-head with the next two finished. Bennett won the 1000 in 9:51.24, with sophomore Jake Greene right behind, while freshman Jeff Donovin took the 200 in 1:46.35 with junior Matt Chrzanowski finishing behind him.
Karedis and Hoke then pushed Lehigh further ahead in the 50 free with Karedis winning the event in 21.29 and Hoke clocking in at 21.62. Hassel added wins in the 200 fly (1:57.05) and the 200 IM (2:01.03).
Brant added a win in the 200 back, with a time of 1:58.16, while freshman Michael Lopinto won the 200 breast in 2:15.30.
On the diving boards, sophomore Dan Bateman took third in the three meter, with a score of 223.90, and sixth in the one meter, with 181.35 points.
In the final event of the meet, Lehigh captured second and third place in the 800 free relay, just behind the winning Yale team. Donovin, Bennett, Chrzanowski and Hassel clocked in at 7:14.88, while Lehigh's other team consisted of Greene, sophomores Martin Kendig and Eric Sherwood and senior Dave Pennenga.
