Lehigh women snap skid with 182-112 win Saturday at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team snapped a three meet losing streak Saturday with a 182-112 win over Drexel at the Drexel Pool inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Freshman Alissa Leung and junior Emily DiDonato once again won two individual events apiece as the Mountain Hawks won nine of the 16 events on the day to improve to 4-5 on the season.
Leung continued her strong efforts in the backstroke events taking the 100 in 58.71 and the 200 in 2:05.36. She was especially dominant in the 200, winning the event by almost seven seconds over the second place finisher.
DiDonato led top three Lehigh sweeps in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events. In the 100, DiDonato posted a time of 1:08.19 with freshman Kim Weyand and sophomore Stephanie Yaszemski occupying the next two spots. In the 200, DiDonato posted a time of 2:28.14 with Weyand again finishing second and junior Danielle Caruso taking third.
Weyand also picked up an event win on the day, taking the 400 yard individual medley in 4:43.61.
The Mountain Hawks also had a strong day in the distance freestyle events taking the top two spots in both the 1000 and 500 free events. Sophomore Giovanna Patafio won the 1000 free in 10:45.31 with Caruso finishing second, while freshman Madeline Smith took the 500 in 5:17.92 with Patafio earning the runner-up spot.
Lehigh's three female divers competed unopposed by Drexel Divers, with freshman Sara Blacker earning the top score in both the one meter (205.65) and three meter (189.97).
“This was a good strong win for our women,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “It was a great all-around team effort.”
Other members of the Mountain Hawks competed at the Navy Invitational Saturday at Lejeune Hall. Competing against athletes from a number of Patriot League schools, plus Shippensburg, a number of Lehigh's backup swimmers had a chance to try for stronger times. Junior Katie Brinkhoff led the Lehigh women, with fourth place finishes in both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events.
The Mountain Hawks will visit University Park, Pa. next Saturday for their final dual meet of the season when they meet Penn State at 1 p.m.
