BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off its first Patriot League Championship in program history, the Lehigh women's soccer team was picked third in the Patriot League preseason poll released Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks look to continue the magic of 2010 which culminated in their first-ever league title and NCAA Tournament appearance. Lehigh garnered 75 points and two first-place votes.
Army was predicted first with 93 points and 10 first-place votes followed by Colgate. Behind Lehigh are Navy (55), Bucknell (52), American (46), Lafayette (25) and Holy Cross (23). The Mountain Hawks lose six seniors to graduation, including the program's third and fifth all-time leading goal scorers (Liz Carlos and Natalie Hojnacki), along with the career leader in goals against average (Lauren Mains). However, Lehigh does return three All-Patriot League honorees (Jana Basubas, Ardyn Olszko and Genna Pepe) while welcoming nine talented freshmen.
The league also announced the preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, awarded to Kim An and Molly McGuigan of Army.
The Mountain Hawks open the regular season on Sunday, Aug. 28 when they travel to Seton Hall to face the Pirates. The squad will then return home to host Binghamton on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
