2/24/2011 8:16:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head women's soccer coach Eric Lambinus announced the team's incoming class of 2015, which consists of nine student-athletes from around the United States. The class features a diverse group of talent, with multiple defenders, midfielders and forwards, along with a goalkeeper. They come to Lehigh from as close as Blandon, Pa. to as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah.
“We are very excited about our group of incoming freshmen,” said Lambinus. “In our recruiting process, it is very important for us to identify high achieving student-athletes who are a great fit for Lehigh. With a great group of student-athletes in our graduating class, we needed players who we feel could compete with our returning players right away.”
The class features Elizabeth Bergman, a defender from nearby Blandon, Pa. Also joining the Mountain Hawks are two Massachusetts natives – Ashley Banks from North Andover and Danielle Salanas from Needham. Darby Dustman comes to Lehigh from Salt Lake City, Utah. They join a 2010 Lehigh squad which featured players from 11 different states, including four from California.
“Not only are they a great group of soccer players who have the potential to impact our team on the field, but we feel that they will be able to contribute to our program in other areas, specifically in a leadership capacity,” said Lambinus. “One of our priorities in the class was to find student-athletes who were identified and recognized by their teams as leaders. I think we accomplished all of our goals with this group. I am excited to start working with them.”
Here is a complete rundown of all the incoming freshmen:
Elizabeth Bergman • D • Blandon, Pa. • Arts & Sciences
Bergman will join the Brown and White from nearby Blandon, Pennsylvania (Fleetwood High School). A three-time All-Berks County selection, she guided Fleetwood to three Berks Division II Championships, the 2009 state semifinal, and the 2008 state final. In her junior season, Bergman was named team captain and MVP for the Tigers. For her work in the classroom, she earned a spot on the 2010 Academic All-State Team as a junior, which adds to her three-time selection to the Berks County Academic Team. With STM FC Lehigh Strikers, Bergman was a team captain and an EPYSA U19 State Cup finalist. In addition to soccer, she earned three varsity letters in field hockey, where she was a 2010 team captain and Second Team All-State selection. Her twin sister, Sarah, will be attending Sacred Heart University in the fall to play field hockey. Off the field, Bergman is actively involved in band and orchestra, while also being a member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Lambinus on Bergman: “Liz is a highly competitive player who has the ability to play several positions on the field. She is very athletic and will develop into a tremendous soccer player in her four years at Lehigh. Her leadership is very apparent as she has been named captain for every team she played.”
Ashley Blanks • GK • North Andover, Mass. • Arts & Sciences
A goalkeeper from North Andover, Massachusetts, Blanks will look to compete for time between the pipes for the Mountain Hawks. A two-year varsity letterwinner at The Governor's Academy, she was named team captain her senior year. Both years in net, Blanks was the Team MVP as well as an All-League honoree. In 2009, she led the Gov's to a quarterfinal appearance in the New England Prep School Tournament. Blanks is a member of the FC Stars of Massachusetts Rovers, where she is a teammate of fellow incoming player Danielle Salans. She has been a member of the Massachusetts State ODP Team for four years. In addition to soccer, Blanks was a member of the North Andover High School varsity ski team and varsity volleyball. Off the field, she is assistant instructor for North Andover Figure Skating Club, a youth ministry volunteer at St. Michael's in North Andover. She is also a DJ assistant for J&J Productions (a musician in The Governor Academy's Jazz Band) and a member of the Massachusetts Special Olympics Management Team.
Coach Lambinus on Blanks: “Ashley is a very strong shot stopper and a technically solid goalkepeer who should compete right away for playing time. She attended our camp over the summer and won over the entire staff over with her personality and overall play.”
Isabel Clements • F • Lyme, Conn. • Arts & Sciences
Clements will join the Mountain Hawks from Lyme, Connecticut. She was a four-year varsity starter at forward for the Choate Rosemary Hall soccer team. In her junior and senior seasons, she was named All-League for the Western New England Prep School Soccer Association. As a member of CFC United, Clements won the Connecticut State Cup in 2007 and 2009, and she helped her team reach the USYSA Region I semifinals both years. Winners of the 2009 Disney Tournament, CFC United plays in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) and will be traveling to Germany this summer to compete with European teams during the Women's World Cup. Clements is also a member of the Connecticut ODP team that reached the Region I semifinals in 2010. When she is not playing, Clements enjoys volunteering. In the summer of 2010, she collected and delivered hundreds of donated soccer jerseys, balls, shin guards, and cleats to L'Association Malienne pour la Promotion de la Jeune Fille et Femme (AMPJF), a program dedicated to improving the lives of girls and women through soccer in Mali, West Africa.
Coach Lambinus on Clements: “Isabel is a physical, aggressive and hard-working player who has a high level of potential at the college level. Her natural position is as a target forward and has a great upside there, but she has the ability to play other positions as well.”
Darby Dustman • M • Salt Lake City, Utah • Engineering
Dustman travels the farthest to join the Lehigh squad in 2011. A midfielder from Salt Lake City, Utah, Dustman was a four-year letterwinner at West High School. She was named team captain for the Panthers in her junior and senior seasons, while also earning First Team All-Region honors. She was awarded the team's MVP award in her sophomore and junior seasons. With Sparta United Soccer Club Premier '93, she was a Utah State Cup Champion in 2010 and participated in US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals. In addition to soccer, Dustman is a member of the West High School varsity golf team. She was also the first overall female in the Blessed Sacrament 5K run and finished first place in her age group for The Other Half Marathon held in Moab, Utah. Off the field, Dustman is a weekly volunteer at Primary Children's Medical Center and a member of Student Government. In her spare time, she enjoys art, winning first place at the Utah State Fair and an Honorable Mention at Weber State College's Art Show.
Coach Lambinus on Dustman: “Our first Darby is from Utah and is a solid defensive midfielder who has a great understanding of the game. She has all the tools for that position - wins tackles, challenges well for balls in the air, possesses good technical ability - but I have seen her play well in a more attacking position as well.”
Jordan Goodwin • D • Flemington, N.J. • Arts & Sciences
Goodwin comes to the Mountain Hawks from Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington, New Jersey. A four-year letterwinner and three-time MVP for the Red Devils, she was named team captain in her junior and senior seasons. Goodwin received both All-Area and All-Conference honors in each of her four seasons as well as an All-State Honorable Mention her junior year. Goodwin is a member of the PDA Tsunami, which were ECNL U17 National Champions, ECNL Club National Champions, and USYS Region 1 Premier League Champions in 2010. The Tsunami was also New Jersey State Champions in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Goodwin was a member of the New Jersey State ODP team from 2005 through 2008 and was selected to the Regional Pool in 2005. She is on Top Drawer Soccer's Players to Watch list. Off the field, Goodwin is involved in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and TOPs Soccer, while also serving as a Peer Mediator.
Coach Lambinus on Goodwin: “Jordan is a natural leader who has played on a very successful club team at PDA that has competed and won at the national level. She is a tactically sound and very technical outside back, who is comfortable getting forward and joining the attack. Her style of play and personality will fit in very well with our team.”
Sophie Mayeux • M • Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. • Arts & Sciences
Mayeux comes to the Brown and White from Briarcliff Manor, New York. A four-year member of the soccer team at the Hackley School, she was the Rookie of the Year in 2007, Playmaker of the Year in 2008, the Team MVP in 2009 and the Animal Award winner in 2010. She led the team to two straight Ivy League Championships in 2007 and 2008 as well as a State Championship in 2008. In 2009, Mayeux topped the Ivy League in points scored (goals and assists). She garnered All-Ivy League honors in each of her four seasons, with first-team nods her last three seasons. Mayeux is currently a member of Albertson Fury Premier '92. Before Albertson, she played for FC Sting Killer Bees, which has since become Syosset Sting 92. With these teams, she has won six consecutive New York State Cup championships from 2005-2010 and two consecutive Region I championships in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, Syosset was a finalist in the National Championships. Off the field, Mayeux is an honor student, who has excelled in the classroom.
Coach Lambinus on Mayeux: “Sophie has also played for highly competitive club teams which have been very successful at the national level. She is a highly technical attacking midfielder who also knows how to defend. She attended our camp and is a perfect fit for our team, both on and off the field.”
Sarah Motta • M • Fort Lauderdale, Fla. • Business
Motta will join the Mountain Hawks from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As a four-year varsity starter for Cardinal Gibbons High School, she helped lead the team to a No. 1 ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 2009. In her career for the Chiefs, she scored 60 goals and notched 55 assists. Motta was a team captain in 2010 and 2011, and she was named the team's MVP in 2010. Motta is a member of the Sunrise Fire 92/93 and Rafael Ferreiro's Pure Futbol Academy. She was invited to Super Y League ODP National camp in 2007, 2009 and 2010. In addition to soccer, Motta is a four-year starter and three-year captain for the lacrosse team, and was named the 2010 Tribune/Sun-Sentinel Lacrosse Player of the Year. Off the field, Motta is a member of National Honor Society and holds a NSCAA Junior Level VI Diploma, a US Lacrosse Umpire certification, and a USSF soccer referee license. She also enjoys volunteering in training youth soccer and lacrosse players.
Coach Lambinus on Motta: “Sarah is a crafty attacking player who can play several different positions in the midfield. She has an aggressive style of play, both offensively and defensively, that should fit our style of play. She is a very accomplished individual off the soccer field, and those attributes were very attractive to our program.”
Danielle Salans • D/M • Needham, Mass. • Arts and Sciences
Salans will join the Brown and White from Needham, Massachusetts. In her time at Needham High School, she led the Rockets to a Bay State Carey Division Championship in 2010. She was named captain and Offensive MVP for the 2010-2011 season. Salans was also named a Bay State First Team All-Star the past two seasons, adding to her Second Team honor from sophomore year. Her freshman year, she was named the Rocket's Varsity Soccer Rookie of the Year. With her club team, the FC Stars of Massachusetts Rovers, Salans has helped the team reach the Massachusetts State Cup semifinals for the past five seasons. She is also a teammate of fellow future Mountain Hawk Ashley Blanks. In addition to soccer, Salans is a captain for the varsity basketball team at Needham High School. She led the team to a Carey Division Championship as well as the Division I South Sectional Finals in her sophomore campaign. Off the field, Salans has been on the honor roll her entire high school career and has received Boston Globe Art Award Honorable Mention for her artistic abilities.
Coach Lambinus on Salanas: “Danielle is a natural defensive player who can play both as a center back and defensive midfield. She is very sound on the ball and a strong presence in the air. I am extremely happy in the way that Danielle deals with difficult situations, and that will help her at Lehigh.”
Darby Wiegand • M/F • Kensington, Md. • Arts and Sciences
Wiegand will join the Lehigh squad from the nation's capital. In her time at Georgetown Visitation Prep School, she led the soccer team to Independent School League Championships in each of her first three seasons. In her senior campaign, Darby received honorable mention All-Met and First Team All-ISL honors, while also serving as team captain. Wiegand is a member of Bethesda Riptide. She also competed in the Super-Y League with the Washington Freedom in 2008 and 2009. In both years, Wiegand was named to the Super-Y ODP team. She was selected to the Super-Y ODP National Team in 2008 and was a Super-Y ODP National Camp First Team selection in 2009. In addition to soccer, Wiegand participated in both basketball and track for her high school. For her hard work in the classroom, she received the 2008 Rubacky 3-E Award, which is a teacher-voted award for enthusiasm and effort in learning. Off the field, Wiegand is the treasurer of Operation Smile and a member of Students Against Drunk Driving.
Coach Lambinus on Wiegand: “Darby is an extremely hard-working student-athlete who has a great feel for the game. She impressed us with her play at our clinic last spring and has great potential to develop as a player. She has played everywhere on the field from center back to forward, and it will be up to us to find her best position.”
