BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 11 Lehigh will close out the regular season with three duals against tough EIWA opponents, beginning Sunday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks host 18th-ranked American. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a dominant performance last Sunday when they outscored Harvard and Brown by a combined 83-10 score in wins at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Freshman Austin Meys and junior Joe Kennedy had two pins each as Lehigh totaled eight wins by fall on the day.
Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro is one win shy of 100 for his career. Santoro picked up his 50th win at Lehigh last Sunday against Harvard.
Freshman Austin Meys has not disappointed in his first varsity season in the Brown and White. Meys is 16-8 on the season with a team-leading nine falls this season. The New York native placed fourth at the Midlands, winning the award for most falls in the quickest time. Last weekend, Meys pinned all three of his opponents last weekend. His last five wins have produced bonus points for the
Mountain Hawks with four of those wins coming by fall. Meys racked up 13 falls while deferring eligibility last season and was named Lehigh's Deferred Wrestler of the Year.
American comes into this weekend with a 12-4 dual record and a six match win streak. The Eagles will face Binghamton on Friday before visiting Bethlehem on Sunday. American has been busy this season, competing at the Pentagon Duals, the Northeast Duals, the National Duals and the Lone Star Duals, plus the Brockport Gold Tournament, the Keystone Classic and the Midlands. American has three wrestlers ranked in the latest Amateur Wrestling News rankings, led by Steve Fittery who is ranked No. 1 at 157 and Ryan Flores who comes in at No. 3 at 285. Six Eagles were ranked in the top 33 of the first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. In the latest EIWA individual rankings, American has wrestlers ranked in eight weight classes. Fittery is ranked No. 1 at 157, while Flores and Matt Mariacher (141) come in at No. 2 at their respective weight classes.
Lehigh and American will meet for just the fourth time on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks have won all three meetings against the Eagles, including a 27-15 triumph in the last meeting at Bender Arena in Washington in December 2007. Lehigh and American also wrestled at the 2003 Sheridan Duals at Stabler Arena and the 2007 Sun Devil Duals, hosted by Arizona State. Sunday's match marks American's first-ever appearance inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The Mountain Hawks have won 24 straight home duals overall and 14 straight duals versus EIWA opponents. Lehigh is 44-1 in home duals against EIWA foes since the start of the 1999-2000 season.
Sunday's match gets underway at 1 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting the Lehigh ticket office located in Grace Hall.
