Colquhoun repeats as softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior shortstop Jen Colquhoun has been voted the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for softball it was announced Wednesday. Colquhoun won the award last year as well as she becomes the first repeat winner of the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in Patriot League softball history. Named a first team All-Patriot League selection on Tuesday, Colquhoun is also one of four Mountain Hawks named to the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League softball team.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors. To be eligible for this honor, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport.
In addition to becoming the first repeat winner of the award, Colquhoun won the seventh Scholar-Athlete award for Lehigh softball and the fourth in the last six years, joining Kate Marvel in 2006 and Lisa Sweeney in 2009.
Colquhoun holds a 3.76 GPA majoring in biochemistry and is a multi-year member of the Dean's List at Lehigh as well as the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Last week, the Oak Park, California native was named to the Academic All-District II first team by the College Sport
s Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), her second All-District honor in as many years.
In addition, Colquhoun is a team representative and committee member for Lehigh's award-winning community outreach C.O.A.C.H. program and played a significant role in the program's annual Adopt-A-Family event in December. She has participated in Science Education Alliance Programs for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in each of the last two years. Colquhoun, who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA last fall, is a two-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award and was a recent recipient of Lehigh University's Class of 1904 Scholarship Award.
On the field, Colquhoun is now a three-time All-Patriot League selection earning first team honors in each of the last two seasons. She has started 40 games at shortstop for the Mountain Hawks this season; batting .272 with two home runs at 25 runs batted in.
Colquhoun is joined on the Academic All-Patriot League team by senior Carly Potock, junior Julie Fernandez and sophomore Rosie Roessel. Lehigh had four of the 11 student-athletes named to the team.
Potock has put up some equally impressive numbers on the field and in the classroom for the Brown and White. The President of Lehigh's Student-Athlete Executive Board and former co-chair of the C.O.A.C.H. program, Potock boasts a 3.94 GPA in marketing. Like Colquhoun she was a first team Academic All-District Selection by CoSIDA and last week received both the Lehigh University Service Award as well as the Marlene “Linny” Fowler Service Award from the Athletic Department. Potock earned second team All-Patriot League honors as Lehigh's right fielder, batting .312 with two homers and 25 RBI in 43 games.
Now a three-time first team All-Patriot League selection athletically, Fernandez was recognized Wednesday for her academic work. Fernandez holds a 3.32 GPA as a behavioral neuroscience major and serves on Lehigh's Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) committee. She is an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar and also received the Class of 1904 award. Fernandez leads Lehigh on the field with a .364 batting average and ranks among the team leaders in doubles, home runs and RBI.
Colquhoun is the third Lehigh student-athlete to be named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010-11, joining Jonathan Stumpf (men's lacrosse) and Patricia Muething (women's tennis).
Lehigh's Academic All-League selections are gearing up for the Patriot League Tournament which begins Thursday at Colgate's Eaton Street Field in Hamilton, N.Y. Lehigh is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 Holy Cross in the tournament's first game at 2 p.m. with No. 1 Colgate and No. 4 Army to follow. Thursday's game will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com.
