BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's lacrosse senior and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Finalist Jonathan Stumpf continues to wrack in the honors as he was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. He is joined by fellow first-line midfielder Roman Lao-Gosney on the league's first-ever All-Academic Team.
Stumpf owns a strong 3.88 GPA in the challenging Integrated Business & Engineering Honors Program, one of the most challenging majors at Lehigh. He also has a focus in Electrical Engineering. Earlier this season, Stumpf was named one of only 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Owning two perfect 4.0 terms, Stumpf has received the Faculty Athletics Council Academic Award and cracked the Dean's List each and every semester. He has been a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient each year as well.
An All-Patriot League honoree for the first time in his career, Stumpf has enjoyed a career year on the field, posting a career-high 25 points via a career-high 15 goals and 10 assists. His top game came at Holy Cross when he posted a hat trick in Lehigh's 11-5 victory over the Crusaders. Stumpf also added four points (two goals, two assists) in the Mountain Hawks' historic 14-10 victory over Navy on Mar. 1, their first win over the Midshipmen since 1913.
One of three team captains, Stumpf has run on the first midfield line for a second straight season. He has shown great leadership on and off the field as he is also heavily involved in Lehigh's Leadership Legacies program as well.
Lao-Gosney joins Stumpf on the 12-player Academic Team. A Philosophy major, Gosney owns a 3.21 GPA while scoring 12 goals and adding three assists as a fellow first-line midfielder. Gosney garnered the Lehigh Faculty Athletics Council Award this past fall while he is also heavily involved in leadership, both in the Emerging Leaders and Legacies program.
On the field, Gosney is sixth on the team with his 15 points. He has been especially hot of late, riding a six-game goal streak, which began on Mar. 29 with a career-high three goals against Binghamton. Gosney added a goal and assist against Navy while posting two points (one goal, one assist) in the season-opener against Saint Joseph's. He also has 20 groundballs on the season.
The Mountain Hawks now look ahead to their first trip to the Patriot League Tournament since 2006. Lehigh will be the No. 4 seed and face top-seeded Bucknell in the semifinal round in Lewisburg. The tournament kicks off with the semifinals on Friday; the Mountain Hawks and Bison will clash at approximately 7:45 p.m. following the first game of the day featuring No. 3 Army against No. 2 Colgate. Both semifinal games along with Sunday's Championship Game will air live on CBS Sports Network.
