The Mountain Hawks will play three of this season's six road games all within a six-day span beginning Sunday. Lehigh will then travel to No. 12 Ohio State for a Tuesday night showdown against the Buckeyes before heading to No. 17 Yale next Saturday.
A second-half run led Lehigh to an all-important Patriot League win on Tuesday. Junior Adam Johnston led the offensive charge with four goals while sophomore Dante Fantoni added five points behind two goals and a career-high three assists. Senior Jonathan Stumpf also tied a career high with four points via two goals and two assists.
The game was back and forth through the opening 30 minutes with Lehigh taking a 6-5 lead into halftime. Neither team held more than a one-goal lead in the first half. Navy went ahead 8-6 in the third quarter, but the Mountain Hawks stormed back. Down by one, Fantoni took over, scoring the game-tying and go-ahead goals late in the quarter for a 9-8 advantage, giving Lehigh a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Fantoni's five points upped his point streak to 15 games dating back to last season while fellow sophomore David DiMaria extended his to 13. Both stand among the best in the nation and are the Patriot League's second and third longest (active) streaks, respectively, behind only Navy's Andy Warner, who owns a 16-game streak.
Sophomore Ryan Snyder continued his tremendous play at the faceoff X, winning 18-of-27 while scooping a career-high 13 ground balls. The nation's leader in faceoff percentage and ground balls per game, Snyder is now up to 35 ground balls through the first three contests. He has also won 73.9 of his draws (51-of-69).
Not to be forgotten was the play of Lehigh's defense and goaltender, which kept the Midshipmen scoreless for 12:30 during the Mountain Hawks' 6-0 run. In total, Lehigh only allowed two Navy goals in the final 24:04 as it held the 8-2 advantage down the stretch. Sophomore Dan Carr was stellar, making nine of his 11 saves after halftime.
This marks the second straight season that the Mountain Hawks and Titans meet after Lehigh came out on top, 21-9, a season ago. Detroit Mercy is coming off a 19-3 victory over Mercer this past week bringing its record to 1-4. The Titans are led by freshman Shayne Adams with his 13 goals, seven of which came against Mercer. Detroit set a school record in that game, outshooting Mercer, 51-26. The Titans also picked up 38 ground balls to the Bears' 22 and forced the opposition into 29 turnovers. Detroit also kept Mercer in check on man-up, holding the Bears to 0-of-7 on extra man opportunities.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to No. 12 Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes at 7 pm. Lehigh will continue its road trip at Yale next Saturday (Mar. 12) at 2 p.m.
