OVERLAND Park, Kan. - Lehigh men's lacrosse senior Jonathan Stumpf was named one of ten finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award after continuing to excel on and off the field. The announcement came on Monday. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help determine the winner, which will be announced at the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse semifinals in Baltimore.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the award honors senior student-athletes, who excel in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.
“Jonathan Stumpf is a living, breathing embodiment of the ideal student-athlete,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “He works to his fullest potential on the field, in the weight room, in the classroom and in the community. He has set a tremendous example for our younger student-athletes and all those who come behind him.”
Stumpf is one of ten finalists, along with standouts from lacrosse powers such as Maryland, Stony Brook, North Carolina, Syracuse, Villanova and Duke. He is one of two finalists from the Patriot League, along with Lafayette's Stefan Bauer.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 20 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award website or on the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through May 10. Fans can cast one vote per day. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner.
Stumpf is Lehigh's second Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist in as many years after Marquis Hall from men's basketball earned the distinction a year ago.
A native of Ellicott City, Maryland, Stumpf has continued his stellar play on the field in 2011. Through nine games, he stands fifth on the team in scoring with 19 points via 11 goals and eight assists. He is coming off his second-career hat trick last time out at Holy Cross, where he also tied a career-high four points. The 19 points already stand as a career-high with six regular season games still remaining.

One of three co-captains, Stumpf's impact goes far beyond the lacrosse field. He has posted a 3.88 cumulative GPA in the Integrative Business and Engineering Honors Program, one of the most challenging majors at Lehigh. Stumpf has received the Faculty Athletics Council Academic Award and cracked the Dean's List each and every semester, while also posting two perfect 4.0 terms. He has been a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient each year as well.
Stumpf has also taken a key leadership role for the Mountain Hawks. He is heavily involved in the Leadership Legacies program, the second phase of the Lehigh Athletics Leadership academy. The phase focuses on the application of core leadership principles to navigate leadership challenges that surface throughout a competitive season.
The midfielder has helped lead Lehigh's community initiative as well. The Mountain Hawks were busy all fall with a number of community events. They began in September with a Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rick Clean-Up and followed that with a South Bethlehem Street Clean-Up. They've gone to local elementary schools and Boys and Girls Clubs, while also hosting free community lacrosse clinics. Stumpf and his teammates went weekly to three different three schools throughout the months of October and November. There, they read to the children while participating in “homework club.” Stumpf and the Mountain Hawks also took part in “Adopt A Family” where they “adopted” a local underprivileged family, and provided them a Christmas by raising money, then purchasing gifts.
Stumpf is a member of the Rossin Junior Fellowship program, an engineering society. The fellowship is open to undergraduate students who show academic leadership, a dynamic personality and a willingness to serve. He was part of a community initiative called “Canstruction” where they used cans to build large structures built entirely from food cans. All the food was donated to local food banks.
Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner May 28 at the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship in Baltimore.
The Mountain Hawks return to the Ulrich Sports Complex for their first of six straight home games to end the regular season, when they host Binghamton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Lehigh will then welcome Penn State on Saturday for a special 1 p.m. faceoff in Goodman Stadium.

ABOUT THE AWARD
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring. Sportscaster Dick Enberg, honorary chair of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, first conceived the idea of an award for seniors in 2001 in response to the growing trend of men's basketball players leaving school early for the NBA. The award program has expanded from men's and women's basketball to include 10 NCAA Division I sports. The award is sponsored by Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, and is managed by Premier Sports Management.
