BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding high after an impressive Patriot League win, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team returns home for the final six games of the regular season beginning on Tuesday when it hosts Binghamton. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks (5-4, 2-1 PL) look to jump two games over .500 for the second time this season and first time since they were 3-1.
Lehigh used a solid all-around effort on Saturday to capture its second league win in its final road game of the regular season. The Mountain Hawks used a combined 10 goals from junior Adam Johnston, sophomore Dante Fantoni and senior Jonathan Stumpf coupled with a stifling defense to top Holy Cross, 11-5. In the process, Lehigh improved to a perfect 21-0 all-time against the Crusaders while moving to 2-1 in Patriot League play for the first time since 2006.
Also stellar for the Mountain Hawks were freshman defenseman Ty Souders and sophomore attackman David DiMaria, who both received honorable mention recognition on Monday's Patriot League Weekly Honor Roll. Souders posted a career-high four groundballs while wreaking havoc on Holy Cross attackmen. He helped spearhead a defense which allowed only one Crusader goal over the game's first 43:23 and only seven shots in the game's first three quarters. Meanwhile, DiMaria finished last week with two goals and four assists, including a team-high four points at No. 8 Army last Tuesday.
Also on Monday, Stumpf, learned that he was named one of ten finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award after continuing to excel on and off the field. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help determine the winner, which will be announced at the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse semifinals in Baltimore. To vote for Stumpf, please click here.
Heading into April, the Mountain Hawks stand all alone in fourth place in the Patriot League standings, a full two games (in the loss column) ahead of Navy, Lafayette and Holy Cross. Lehigh - who is looking to make its first Patriot League Tournament since 2006 - plays three league games to close out the season, all at home vs. Colgate, Bucknell and Lafayette.
The Mountain Hawks are looking to win their first four home games for the first time since 2008. With a win, Lehigh would also have a winning record after 10 games for the first time since 2006.
The Bearcats have been through an up-and-down season, which has featured solid wins over Colgate and Hobart, but also the resignation of head coach Ed Stephenson. Binghamton recently put together a four-game winning streak to improve to 4-3 before falling to Siena last time out, 10-3. Leading the offense is Matt Springer with a team-high 19 goals and 21 points. Tyler Perrelle and David Raleigh are also in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively. All 10 of Perrell's points have come via goals. Faceoff man Chris Cook leads the team in groundballs with 36 to go with his .476 winning percentage while defenseman Ben Waldron has impressed with 25 groundballs and a team-high 16 caused turnovers. Three Bearcats have seen time in goal, led by Kraig Keston, who is 4-1 with a strong 6.44 GAA and .611 save percentage.
Lehigh and Binghamton have played one time in their history, a thrilling 16-15 overtime victory last Mar. 30. The Mountain Hawks came all the way back from down 7-2, capped off by the overtime game-winner from Alex Drake. That marked the first of three overtime victories for Lehigh, leading into two straight to end the season over No. 9 Villanova and No. 19 Lafayette.
The Mountain Hawks remain home on Saturday when they welcome Keystone State rival and No. 20 nationally ranked Penn State for a special 1 p.m. faceoff in Goodman Stadium. Tickets are available online at Lehighsports.com and be calling 610-7LU-GAME.
