DOVER, Del. - The Lehigh baseball team (2-2) finished its final preparation for its spring break trip next week with a tough 11-6 setback at Delaware State on Wednesday afternoon. Lehigh got off to a rough start and trailed by as much as 10 in the fourth inning. The Mountain Hawks had a rally that would eventually fall short.
"They came out and got a big lead on us early," said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary. "We kept fighting, but it was too much of a deficit for us. I was really pleased with how some of our freshmen stepped up and played though."
Lehigh was unlucky on Wednesday, as Delaware State starter Tommy Gill tossed an impressive five innings. Gill gave up one run on just two hits and four strikeouts to pick up the win. Lehigh squandered out six hits and were led by Ryan Gajdos and Joe Abeln, who had two RBI each. Abeln's two RBI came on a two-run homerun in the seventh inning. Jayme Edwards pitched a solid two innings of relief for Lehigh, striking out four batters and giving up no hits.
Delaware State tallied three runs in the second, one run in the third and six runs in the fourth to make the score 10-0 in favor of the Hornets early. Lehigh would do its best to battle back, but the deficit would be too much for the Mountain Hawks to overcome.

Jeff Wiand led off the fifth inning with a double to give Lehigh some life. He later would steal third base, and then would score on Chad Warga's groundout to the shortstop. Lehigh would then add on another run in the sixth inning, when Logan Winchester scored on Andy Russell's groundout. Lehigh trailed 10-2 after six.
Casey Turner got on base from an error in the seventh inning. Abeln, who had entered the game at catcher earlier, cracked a two-run shot on his very first pitch in his first ever collegiate at-bat. The two-run homer made the score 10-4 in favor of Delaware State. The Hornets added a run in the bottom half of the inning though to make the score 11-4.
In top of the ninth, Wiand and Brandon Sady each made it on base. That set up a Gajdos single, which score both Wiand and Sady. That would not be enough for the Mountain Hawks though, as Delaware would secure the 11-6 win.
Lehigh will be back in action with its trip to Davenport, Fla. beginning this Saturday. The Mountain Hawks will open the trip on Saturday with a 4 p.m. matchup with Yale.
