McGaheran’s walk-off hit leads Mountain Hawks to 5-4 victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh baseball team (8-6) had a remarkable 5-4 victory on Friday afternoon, as Brendan McGaheran roped an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to give Lehigh a 5-4 walk-off win on the Goodman campus.
Colin Gotzin earned the start on the mound for the Mountain Hawks, throwing a solid 4.1 innings giving up two runs. Brandon Sady and Cory Kent were stellar in relief, as Kent earned the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. McGaheran went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Andy Russell picked up three hits and an RBI as well. Kevin Mihalik also connected on two hits for the Mountain Hawks.
Iona was the first team on the board, as the Gaels scored on an RBI double and an RBI ground out. Those were the only runs that Gotzin would give up for the day.
In the bottom of the first, Billy Goldman, who reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second base and then scored all the way from second on a wild pitch, as the ball bounced to the backstop and Goldman was aggressive all the way. Iona had a 2-1 lead at that point.
McGaheran led off the bottom of the third inning with a single. After stealing second and third base, he scored on Mihalik's RBI single. The game was tied at two after three innings. Iona would go back out in front though in the fifth inning, as the Gaels led 3-2.
As they did all day, the Mountain Hawks rallied to score a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Russell scored on a ground ball out after he doubled earlier in the inning. Iona once again responded though with a run in the seventh to recapture the lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Goldman walked to lead off the inning, and then stole second. After a few seconds, he then went to third base because nobody was covering the base. Goldman then scored the tying run on a scorcher to second base from Russell that got through.
In the top of the ninth, Corey Kent got out of a first-and-third one out jam, inducing a short fly to left field, causing the runner to stay at third and not tag. Chris Burke then fouled out to deep right field to end the Iona scare.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lehigh took advantage of a Casey Turner leadoff walk. McGaheran hit a rocket to deep left-center field, and Turner scored standing up for the game-winner.
Lehigh will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. on the Goodman campus.
