BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's lacrosse team plays its third game in a six-day span when it travels to Yale on Saturday to face the undefeated and No. 18 Bulldogs. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. The Mountain Hawks (3-2) look to bounce back from an 11-7 loss at No.13 Ohio State on Tuesday.
Saturday wraps up a three-game road swing for the Mountain Hawks. They will play seven of their final nine at home, including six straight to end the regular season. After returning home next Saturday, Lehigh hits the road for a pair of crucial Patriot League contests at Army and Holy Cross, which mark their final road games of the regular season.
Yale is already Lehigh's third opponent currently ranked in the nation's top 20. The Mountain Hawks lost a tough 9-8 final at No. 20 Villanova while falling in a tight game at No. 13 Ohio State last time out. In between, Lehigh won two straight games – over Navy and Detroit Mercy – by a 14-10 and 13-9 final, respectively.
Lehigh bounced back from an early 2-0 hole on Tuesday by coming back to tie the score at three, and again at four. The Buckeyes took a 5-4 lead into halftime and extended it after scoring four of the five third-quarter goals. The Mountain Hawks pulled back within three on two occasions, but it proved to be too little, too late.
Leading the offense was junior Cameron Lao-Gosney, who posted Lehigh's first two goals while adding an assist. Sophomore Dante Fantoni also scored a pair, improving his point streak to 17 straight games. That is currently tied for the 20th longest active streak in the nation. Fellow sophomore David DiMaria also upped his streak to 15 games, currently 28th nationally.
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 3-0 record, opening the season with a 10-8 win over St. John's. Yale then responded with a pair of dominant wins over Presbyterian (22-6) and Mercer (22-1) last Thursday and Friday. Brian Douglass leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists). Deron Dempster is tied for the goal lead as well with eight (to go along with three assists). Ryan McCarthy also has nine (five goals, four assists). Tewaaraton Award Candidate Matt Gibson has played in one game this season, scoring a goal while dishing an assist.
Goalie Jonathan Falcone has been stellar between the pipes, posting a 4.15 GAA and .654 save percentage in three starts. Yale has been strong at the faceoff X as a combination of Cole Yeager and Dylan Levings have won 67.9 percent of its draws.
Saturday will mark the ninth all-time meeting between Lehigh and Yale with the Bulldogs winning six of the first eight. The first game came way back in 1916, a 4-0 Lehigh win. Lehigh also won the 1918 meeting before Yale has responded with six in a row, including last year when it downed the Mountain Hawks, 8-6. That was the first meeting since 2003, when Yale was victorious, 15-9.
Lehigh returns home next Saturday (Mar. 19) to host Presbyterian at 12 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
