BETHLEHEM, PA. - Lehigh pitcher Cory Kent was part of a group of 45 players named to the preseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award. The list was announced on Tuesday and the award is given to the top Division I relief pitcher in the nation.
Kent earned second-team All-Patriot League honors last year on a Lehigh team that improved from sixth-place in 2009 to second in the regular season in 2010. He appeared in 18 games, making four starts, and finished with nine saves on the season. He had six saves in Patriot League play and added another in the League Tournament. Kent posted a 1.46 ERA in Patriot League action.
Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. The initial list will be updated with a mid-season release the week of April 18, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 1, prior to start of NCAA regional tournament competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced in Omaha on the opening day of the College World Series on June 18.
