Mountain Hawks’ ninth inning rally leads to 8-7 victory over Ohio

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Lehigh baseball team (2-1, 0-0) capped off a successful weekend at Davidson, N.C. on Sunday with an 8-7 victory over the Ohio Bobcats. Trailing 7-4 headed into the top half of the ninth inning, the Mountain Hawks rallied to score four runs that came on clutch RBI hits from Billy Goldman and Austin Borden.
“I am really excited for all the guys and how well they played this weekend,” said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary. “We were really counting on the seniors to be productive, and they were. One day it was Brendan McGaheran, another day it was Andy Russell, today it was the strong pitching of Cory Kent.”
Kent was the storyline, as he came into the game in the sixth inning as Lehigh trailed 7-4. Kent was nearly flawless, as he hurled four innings, giving up three hits and no runs to earn the victory. Borden led the way for the Mountain Hawks on the offensive end, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, including the game-winning RBI single in the top of the ninth inning.
Ohio scored the first runs of the game when they tallied three of them on three hits in the first inning. The Bobcats would add another run in the second inning, making the score 4-0 in favor of Ohio. Ryan Patrick took over the pitching duties for Lehigh in the middle of the second inning, and pitched decently in relief. He would give up two earned runs in the next 2.2 innings to keep the game in reaching distance for the Brown and White.
Lehigh was on the board in the fourth inning. McGaheran led off the inning with a single to left field. Russell then doubled to give the Mountain Hawks runners at second and third with two outs. McGaheran then scored on Kevin Mihalik's base hit, to make the score 4-1.
Ohio would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Kent shut the door on the Bobcats from there. In the sixth inning, McGaheran reached on an error to start things for the Mountain Hawks. Goldman then was hit by a pitch, giving Lehigh runners on first and second with no outs. After two-straight fly outs, things were not looking good for Lehigh. Logan Winchester delivered a blow though, as he ripped a double down the right field line, scoring McGaheran. A Borden single then scored two more runs, shrinking Ohio's lead to 7-4.
Lehigh headed into the ninth still trailing 7-4. Sean Killeen came in for a pinch-hitting opportunity to lead off the inning, and walked. Lehigh would eventually load the bases, setting things up for Goldman, who slapped a single to center field, scoring two runs and making the score 7-6. McGaheran then tied the game up when he scored on a throwing error. Borden then delivered the game-winning hit two batters later on a base-hit, scoring Mihalik.
For the game, Lehigh collected 10 hits while the Bobcats had 13. Ohio had four fielding miscues while the Mountain Hawks had two. The Brown and White left eight runners on base while the Bobcats left 10.
Lehigh will be back in action on March 2 as it travels down to Delaware State for a 2:30 matchup.
