Dominant pitching leads Lehigh to 7-3 victory over Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coming off a tough loss to Ohio University on Friday, the Lehigh baseball team (1-1, 0-0) rallied and turned in a dominant performance on the pitching mound, leading to a 7-3 win over the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday. Sophomore pitcher Cameron Phillips, who saw limited action last year, earned the win as he tossed five innings of one-hit scoreless ball in relief.

Freshman Mike Burke earned the start on the mound for Lehigh, as he pitched a very respectable four innings and gave up three runs, along with striking out two batters. With Lehigh leading 5-2, Phillips was asked to come in and try to hold Davidson. After allowing a run that Burke was responsible for on a sacrifice fly, Phillips would be lights out from there. In his five scoreless innings he struck out five and allowed just four base runners.

“This was an outstanding performance by our two young pitchers tonight,” said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary. “To have Phillips throw those five innings of shutout baseball was big for us. It was as good as an effort as anyone could've asked for, especially considering the fact that Davidson was playing good baseball, winning four of its last five games.”

The top of the Mountain Hawk lineup was very productive, as seniors Brendan McGaheran (1) and Andy Russell (3) combined for four of Lehigh's five RBI. McGaheran and Russell each picked up two hits and Russell added a stolen base as well. The Brown and White played a very crisp game, as they had no errors in the field.

“McGaheran and Russell at the top of the lineup were really good for us today,” said Leary. “They were the catalyst of the game.”

After a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Mountain Hawks got on the board in the second inning. Senior Logan Winchester led off the inning by reaching first base on an error by the third baseman. Seniors Sean Killeen and Brendan Pifer loaded the bases with no outs as they both singled. After a wild pitch miscue, Winchester would score giving Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, the Mountain Hawks would add another run on a Jeff Wiand sacrifice fly.

Lehigh would then get another run in the third when senior Billy Goldman led off the inning with a double. He would eventually score on a sac-fly by Russell, making the score 3-0 in favor of Lehigh.

Davidson rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut Lehigh's lead to 3-2, and then tacked on a third run in the fifth. Burke's productive day was over, as Phillips took over from there. Lehigh would tack on two runs in the fifth and sixth inning to secure a 7-3 victory.

The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in rematch with Ohio.
