OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Lehigh men's lacrosse senior Jonathan Stumpf has been named a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, as announced on Wednesday. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the award honors senior student-athletes, who excel in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.
Stumpf is among 20 players in the nation named a candidate, joining players from various programs such as perennial powers Duke, Syracuse, North Carolina and Maryland. Also on the list is Kevin Crowley of Stony Brook, Lacrosse Magazine's National Preseason Player of the Year. Stumpf is one of only two Patriot League players on the list, joining Lafayette's Stefan Bauer.
“We are thrilled that Jonathan has been selected as a candidate for such a prestigious award," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "He is a tireless worker, who has molded himself into the epitome of a student-athlete, excelling in a challenging major while also running on our first midfield line and spearheading our community efforts. To have him recognized among such a select group shows how much he has already accomplished in his time at Lehigh.”
Stumpf has enjoyed a stellar career at Lehigh since day on. On the field, he has been a steady contributor for the Mountain Hawks, leading into 2011, which sees him running as a first line midfielder. Stumpf has recorded 35 career points behind 21 goals and 14 assists, including his freshman campaign when he finished fourth on the team with 18 points. It didn't take long for the senior co-captain to contribute in 2011, as he tied a career-high with four points (two goals, two assists) in Lehigh's 16-7 season-opening victory over Saint Joseph's last Saturday.
Off the field, Stumpf has excelled equally as much, posting a 3.88 cumulative GPA in the challenging Integrative Business and Engineering Honors Program, one of the most challenging majors at Lehigh. Stumpf has received the Faculty Athletics Council Academic Award and cracked the Dean's List each and every semester, while also posting two perfect 4.0 terms. He has been a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient each year as well.
One of three senior captains this season along with Richard Bradley and Will Scudder, Stumpf has taken a key leadership role for the program. He is heavily involved in the Leadership Legacies program, the second phase of the Lehigh Athletics Leadership academy. The phase focuses on the application of core leadership principles to navigate leadership challenges that surface throughout a competitive season.
A native of Ellicott City, Md., Stumpf has helped lead Lehigh's community initiative. The Mountain Hawks were busy all fall with a number of community events. They began in September with a Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rick Clean-Up and followed that with a South Bethlehem Street Clean-Up. They've gone to local elementary schools and Boys and Girls Clubs, while also hosting free community lacrosse clinics. Stumpf and his teammates went weekly to three different three schools throughout the months of October and November. There, they read to the children while participating in “homework club.” Stumpf and the Mountain Hawks also took part in “Adopt A Family” where they “adopted” a local underprivileged family, and provided them a Christmas by raising money, then purchasing gifts.
Stumpf is a member of the Rossin Junior Fellowship program, an engineering society. The fellowship is open to undergraduate students who show academic leadership, a dynamic personality and a willingness to serve. He was part of a community initiative called “Canstruction” where they used cans to build large structures built entirely from food cans. All the food was donated to local food banks.
Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner May 28 at the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship in Baltimore.
Stumpf and the Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats. Lehigh returns to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday, Mar. 1 for its Patriot League opener against Navy. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.

ABOUT THE AWARD
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring. Sportscaster Dick Enberg, honorary chair of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, first conceived the idea of an award for seniors in 2001 in response to the growing trend of men's basketball players leaving school early for the NBA. The award program has expanded from men's and women's basketball to include 10 NCAA Division I sports. The award is sponsored by Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, and is managed by Premier Sports Management.
