Lehigh women’s basketball brings joy to children at St. Luke’s Hospital

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team took time during a busy final exam period to visit young patients at St. Luke's Hospital Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks continued their active role in the community, handing out basketballs, water bottles and posters to the children, while helping put a smile on their faces.“Our annual visit to St. Luke's Hospital during the finals period is an opportunity for our program to have a positive influence in our community,” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. “It's something the team looks forward to during the holiday season. The opportunity to bring a smile to both parents and children during this time of year when the kids are ill is especially meaningful.”
“Our team really values being able to make an impact in the community,” said sophomore Alexandra Yantzi. “We had a really good time. It was nice to see them smile. It's that time of year when you want to spread cheer and give back.”
One moment stands out for Troyan.
“We visited with one child who went to our Education Day game against Villanova and he was thrilled to meet Kelly Peterson and remembered her three-pointer to send the game into overtime,” she said.
With the visit coming during the final exam period, it served as a break for the Lehigh student-athletes as well.
“It really puts things into perspective because we can complain about finals, but it makes you realize that we're really lucky we're healthy and have the opportunity to play basketball,” said Yantzi. “As a team, it was nice to be able to see the kids, make people smile and give back.”
