Lehigh faces Monmouth Friday in Easton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As part of the Thanksgiving Classic, the Lehigh women's basketball team (1-4) will take on Monmouth (0-3) Friday at 6 p.m. in Easton, Pa. It will be the sixth matchup between the schools as Lehigh's lone win in the series came in the 2005-06 season. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough loss at No.13/13 Rutgers, but Lehigh will look to turn things around Friday as it will look to improve to 37-24 against NEC opponents.
Despite a great effort from Lehigh, it was not enough as the Mountain Hawks fell 68-40 to No. 13/13 Rutgers Tuesday. Senior Aly Byorick led the way with 11 points after she caught fire in the first half with three three-pointers. Lehigh trailed by just one point more than half way through the opening 20 minutes thanks to some hot shooting behind the arc as all six of the Mountain Hawks' first-half field goals were from three. Rutgers pulled away in the second half however as the Scarlet Knights dialed up the defensive pressure.
Lehigh is led by Patriot League Preseason All-League member senior Alexa Williams. The 6-3 forward is leading the team in scoring and rebounding as her 12.6 points ranks fifth in the Patriot League while her 8.6 rebounds puts her second. Williams also has been getting it done on the defensive end as her 1.2 blocks per game ranks seventh.
The Mountain Hawks will take on a Monmouth team that has dropped its first three games as it opened with a four-point loss to UMBC before falling to Wake Forest and its most recent loss was to No. 14/16 Georgetown Monday.
Monmouth returns four starters from last year's squad that went 23-10 and earned a berth in the WNIT. The Hawks are paced by Carly Thibault and Alexis Canady. Thibault is the team's leading scorer at 12.7 points per game and leads the teams in three-point shooting at 50% (10-for-20) while Canady is averaging 10.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
The Hawks were tabbed to finish fourth in the NEC and received two first-place votes while Alysha Womack was named to the Preseason All-NEC Team.
Womack hasn't played yet this season and will not be available for Friday's game as she is recovering from a knee injury.
The Mountain Hawks' lone win against Monmouth came on November 28th, 2005 when Lehigh won 64-45.
Friday's game will be the second of three against NEC opponents this season. Lehigh fell 68-51 to Sacred Heart on November 16th as it was the Mountain Hawks' first loss against an NEC team since 2007, snapping an 11-game win streak vs. NEC schools.
Along with Lehigh and Monmouth, Lafayette and Wagner will be taking part in the Thanksgiving Challenge.
Tuesday's game can be heard on WLVR-FM 91.3 and online at Lehighsports.com as Matt Markus will handle the commentary.
