BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team recently wrapped up its fall season as the Mountain Hawks continue working hard in preparation for the spring.
“We have a brand new team because there are so many younger players competing for playing time,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “The fall season provided experience for our players and also allowed us to experiment with some position changes.
“The freshman class is very competitive and they're doing well figuring out the college game,” Redfern continued. “The fact that there could be as many as five or six of them on the field at any one time is a little unusual for a Division I program. We expect this competitive environment to elevate the level of play of all our team members.”
Although many players got quality practice minutes this fall, a clear starting lineup did not emerge. A number of Mountain Hawks will be competing for time come preseason, which could be a good thing.
“There are a lot of unknowns about this group as far as how fast they can progress and grow up out there on the field,” said Redfern. “We think they have a lot of potential. They're competing hard against one another which is a good sign. There are a lot of players in the mix which is great progress for our program overall.”
In the end, the fall was less about results and more about experience and getting better. The Mountain Hawks faced a number of strong squads in the fall, which helped prepare them for the spring season.
Lehigh also focused greatly on strength and conditioning with strength coach Eric Markovcy.
“We've worked really hard in strength and speed with Eric,” said Redfern. “We dedicate a lot of minutes to this area in the fall. It is a core strength of our program and a major priority in player development.”
The Mountain Hawks will kick off their spring schedule this February. Check back to Lehighsports.com over the coming days for the complete schedule announcement.
