Mountain Hawks set to compete at Mid-Atlantic Qualifiers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women'scross country team will compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Qualifying race on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. in Princess Anne, Md. The Mountain Hawks will look to cap off a successful season by hoping to improve upon their current No. 13 regional ranking. Lehigh finished ninth last year led by Katherine Pierce who finished 27th, as she will be looking to finish inside the Top 25 this year.
At the qualifying race Saturday, the top two teams and four individuals per region automatically qualify while teams and individuals (who finish in the Top 25) are eligible for at-large bids.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Patriot League Championships during an October blizzard at Lehigh. Pierce placed second in the championship meet, earning her All-Patriot League honors for the third time in her career.
Pierce was not only honored for her performances on the course this year, but off the course as well as she was named on Tuesday to the Patriot League All-Academic Team as she owns a 3.51 cumulative GPA in Lehigh's IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Science) program and is focusing on architecture and design arts with some civil engineering mixed in.
Along with Pierce, Lehigh will rely on the rest of its pack which includes frontrunner freshman Savannah Plombon and sophomores Marissa Galante, Katherine Howley and Jessica Kendzor.
The Mid-Atlantic Region is comprised of high-level Division I programs. Villanova currently sits stop the region followed by Georgetown, West Virginia, Penn State and rounding out the Top 5 is Princeton. There are two other Patriot League schools in the mix which are No. 7 American and No. 8 Bucknell.
Lehigh has already raced against most of the schools in the race this season, specifically earlier in the year at the Paul Short Run which was held on the Goodman Campus Course. The Mountain Hawks finished 24th in the race led by Pierce's 66th-place finish.
The Mountain Hawks ranking has fluctuated throughout the year between 10th and 13th.
