Mountain Hawks row in snow shortened Head of the Schuylkill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Racing in wintry conditions on Saturday, the Lehigh rowing teams took part in five different events at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta before the afternoon session was cancelled as the conditions continued to deteriorate. The women's team saw its first action of the young season after the men took part in the Head of the Charles last weekend. In the end, the Mountain Hawks enjoyed success, finishing in the top half of numerous events, while showing significant improvement over last season's regatta.
“Overall, it was a great day with results,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “The weather began to affect all of the racing, especially by mid-day. We've training ourselves to not let conditions affect our racing; our athletes did a fantastic job remaining poised and able to race.”
Lehigh entered multiple boats in some of the events to continue gaining more racing experience in preparation for the spring. The Mountain Hawks' highest finish came in the Men's Open 4+ as a crew came in seventh (14:36.47) while two other Lehigh boats finished in 12th and 15th, respectively.
Other top finishes came in the Men's Open Club Eight (ninth), Women's Open 4+ (11th), Women's College Freshmen 8+ (17th) and Men's College Freshmen 8+ (23rd). For the complete rundown of Lehigh finishers, please see below.
For the women, it marked their first races of the season as they ultimately begin the road to the Patriot League Championships in April.
“The women did an outstanding job for their first race,” said Conley. “The varsity was set to race three times on the day, but the weather only allowed for one race. Being in the top half of finishers was our goal and we accomplished that.”
Having the majority of the afternoon cancelled was disappointing, but done for the safety of all the participants and spectators.
“The crews that didn't get to race understood it was for their safety. We had already decided as a coaching staff that any more racing was not worth the risk of hypothermia or anything else potentially worse,” said Conley. “I am happy the regatta officials saw the same thing.”
The Mountain Hawks return to action in two weekends in their last competition of the fall as they race in the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday, Nov. 12 and the Braxton Regatta on Sunday, Nov. 13.
“We have made some good progress this fall,” said Conley. “The final two races will help us prepare for what the spring is all about. We'll continue to hammer the fundamentals and make ourselves faster for the spring.”
