BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Brandon Hatchett has been named EIWA Wrestler of the Week, it was announced on Sunday. Hatchett upset third-ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell at 165 Thursday night, which helped propel the 17th-ranked Mountain Hawks to an upset of No. 1 Cornell, 17-15, at Stabler Arena.
Hatchett is the third Lehigh wrestler to earn an EIWA weekly award, joining sophomore Robert Hamlin (Jan. 9) and junior Zach Rey (Nov. 28).
In the rubber match Hatchett wasted little time putting points on the board as he scored the bouts first, and only takedown just 38 seconds in. Kerber escaped to pull within 2-1 and the wrestlers traded escapes in the final two periods. Hatchett wrestled a smart tactical match and stayed on the attack despite nursing the one-point lead, and was rewarded with a 3-2 victory. The win makes Kerber the highest-ranked wrestler Hatchett has beaten in his career.
Hatchett's win gave Lehigh a 10-9 lead in the dual. The Mountain Hawks also received wins by decision from freshman Stephen Dutton at 141 and Hamlin at 184. Freshman Frank Cagnina and Rey picked up major decision wins, with Rey's win at heavyweight clinching Lehigh's first-ever win over a number one ranked team.
For the season, Hatchett is now 10-8 with five of those ten wins against wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in the first coaches panel rankings, which were released last Thursday.
Hatchett and the Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Friday when they visit No. 3 Virginia Tech for a 7 p.m. dual. The match will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as online at Lehighsports.com.
