BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team (10-7, 0-2) will look to get its first Patriot League victory of the season on the road at Army on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks, who have started 0-2 in the Patriot League for the first time since 2006-07, will look to get back on track against a Black Knight squad that has got off to a 2-0 start in league play.
Lehigh is coming off a 63-62 heartbreaking loss at the Navy Midshipmen on Jan. 12. In an exciting game that featured 10 lead changes and six ties, Navy's Chey Arvin had the game-deciding basket, as she drilled a three with 29 seconds remaining, putting Navy up 61-60. Senior Courtney Dentler was then called on a charge with 11 seconds to go. Angela Myers scored on a drawn up inbounds play to put Navy up by three. Junior Alexa Williams hit a two-point jumper, but that would not be enough, ending the game in a 63-62 win for the Midshipmen. Senior Courtney Dentler led the way for the Mountain Hawks, scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Junior Emily Gratch added 14 points and senior Kristen Dalton contributed eight points and seven assists.
Army enters Sunday with an 8-8 record, sitting at 2-0 in Patriot League play. The Dark Knights are most recently coming off a 50-47 victory at Holy Cross on Jan. 13. Army is an impressive 6-1 in home games this year, which included wins over Medaille, St. Francis (NY), Penn, Loyola, Bryant and Yale. Their lone home loss came to Northeastern. Leading the offense for the Black Knights is senior forward Erin Anthony, who is averaging 14.4 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Jesse Coiffard, who is averaging 6.4 points on the season, has picked up her game since league play started. Coiffard is averaging a team-best 13.0 points in league games. Nalini Hawkins is averaging 5.4 points for the Dark Knights and has a team-best 37 assists. Army has been strong on defense this season, leading the Patriot League in scoring defense (53.9), field goal percentage defense (.360) and blocked shots (4.7).
Lehigh holds a 26-21 all-time advantage against the Black Knights. Lehigh has won seven of the last eight matchups, including a 49-43 Mountain Hawk victory in the last matchup on Feb. 14, 2010 at West Point. The teams first met during the 1983-84 season as Army grabbed a close 73-72 victory over Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will be playing their 10th road game of the season on Sunday. Lehigh returns to action on Jan. 19 when the Mountain Hawks play host to Colgate at 7 p.m. Three days later on Jan. 22, Lafayette will make the crosstown trip to Stabler Arena to play the Mountain Hawks.
