BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two early second-half goals lifted St. Francis (Pa.) to a 3-2 win over Lehigh at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Juniors Abby Tilton and Madison Ingal recorded goals for the Mountain Hawks, while senior goalkeeper Jessica Miller made six stops. The loss drops Lehigh to 1-3 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks held an 18-11 edge in shot attempts, but St. Francis keeper Katelyn Vitali stood strong with 12 saves.
"Their goalie was very quick," Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer said. "She was good on the initial shot and good on her angles as well. We had a lot of shots go wide of the post, but we needed to have people on the post."
The Red Flash (1-3) scored the game's first goal, their first goal of the season, at the 5:20 mark of the first half. Rebecca Reiff knocked the ball onto the stick of Tia Dudukovich, who fired the ball onto the boards from the left of the cage.
Lehigh responded to equalize shortly before the break when Tilton buried her second of the season. Vitali made the initial save on a long shot from the edge of the circle, but Tilton stayed with the rebound and poked home the loose ball amidst a jumble of players in front of the cage.
Miller then came up with a huge stop to preserve the tie when she stoned Jocelyn Scillia on a breakaway in the waning moments of the first half.
The game was ultimately decided early in the second when Scillia put away two goals in a span of 1:01. The first was an unassisted effort in which Scillia dribbled around a defender and made a nifty move to beat Miller at 37:12. Scillia added the second off a pass from Dudukovich at the right of the cage.
Lehigh did not go quietly, however, and pulled a goal back when Ingal produced a brilliant individual effort, cutting down the center of the field to beat Vitali at 42:53.
Tilton came within inches of knotting the score at three apiece, but her shot skipped just wide with a minute to play.
"I thought we were better in the second half than in the first," Mazer said. "We have work to do, I know we're capable of much better."
Lehigh will hit the road for the first time in the 2010 season when it travels to Fairfield on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
