Lehigh upended by Fairfield in road-opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore Kim Eng scored her team-leading third goal of the season, but Lehigh could not hold an early lead as the Mountain Hawks fell 2-1 at Fairfield in their first road game of the season Wednesday at University Field. Amanda Sullivan scored twice for the host Stags, including the game-winner five minutes into the second half. Despite significant improvement from their two losses over the weekend, Lehigh falls to 1-4 on the season with the loss.
“We played exponentially better than we did on Sunday,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Our problem is consistency. We've shown flashes of greatness where we string passes together and create shots on goal, and we also have flashes where we can't even get the ball out of our backfield.”
Eng put the visiting Mountain Hawks in front when she scored off a penalty corner 12 minutes into the contest. Senior Claire Horn and junior Abby Tilton assisted on the goal.
Fairfield (2-3) tied things up in the 28th minute when Sullivan took a long pass from Marit Westenberg and dribbled around Lehigh goalkeeper Jess Miller for her second goal of the season.
The teams went into halftime tied at one. Fairfield held a 9-6 advantage in shots through 35 minutes while each team had five penalty corners.
The Stags controlled the stat-sheet in the second half and took the lead at the 40:08 mark when Sullivan collected a rebound and shot past Miller to put Fairfield up 2-1. Fairfield out-shot Lehigh 11-0 after halftime and had six corners to just one for the Mountain Hawks.
“Overall we took much better care of the ball,” Mazer explained. “We had a 15 minute stretch early in the second half where we struggled. We have to continue taking better care of the ball. We need to do a better job finishing, and we need to put together a complete game if we're going to have success.”
Miller did her part to keep Lehigh in the game, making 13 saves, but the Mountain Hawks, who were without several starters in the midfield, could not find the consistency on the offensive end. Eng had four of Lehigh's six total shots, while sophomore Carly Smith had the other two.
The Mountain Hawks will look to snap their four-game slide when they return to action Saturday against Georgetown. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Washington, D.C.
