Lehigh falls short at Georgetown

Georgetown came out firing in the opening half and never looked back. Catherine Shugrue opened the scoring in the 5th minute off a feed from Annie Wilson, before Wilson passed it to Charlotte Tierney to make it 2-0 before nine minutes had elapsed. Tierney added her second of the day 13 minutes later after firing the ball through traffic off a pass from Shugrue. The Hoyas were not finished and added a fourth first-half goal when Claire Mittermiller assisted Kimberly Keating in the 32nd minute.
“We had a very poor start to the game,” Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer said. “Overall, our poise with the ball and our ability to possess the ball were very poor and undisciplined. I give Georgetown credit, though. They played a nice game and took advantage of their early opportunities.”
The Hoyas held a 14-3 shot advantage in the first half and attempted four penalty corners to Lehigh's two. Miller made two stops in the half, before giving way to Stefaniwsky at the start of the second frame.
Just four minutes out of the gate, Georgetown made it 5-0 when Laura Thistle sent the ball to the boards behind the Mountain Hawks' keeper.
Lehigh was able to grab a consolation late in the game when Kuhns spoiled keeper Briana Pereira's shutout with an unassisted tally at 58:17. Pereira made four saves on the afternoon as the Mountain Hawks' offense generated eight second-half shot attempts.
“We picked up our intensity in the second half,” Mazer said. “We played a much more physical style and we were getting to more fifty-fifty balls.”
Sophomore Kim Eng, junior Abby Tilton and senior Cassie Willard each attempted two shots for Lehigh, while Wilson led Georgetown with seven attempts.
“I thought Cassie Willard played great, she was playing in two different spots today,” Mazer added. “Caitlin Donnelly was outstanding, too. Those two players stood out to me, but we need an outstanding effort from every single player.”
The Mountain Hawks will try to regroup at home on Wednesday against St. Joseph's. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and live stats will be available at Lehighsports.com.
