EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team set the tone for the 2010-11 edition of the Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry, defeating the Leopards on Saturday by a 17-46 score. Senior Evans Kosgei finished the 8K in 26:40.0 and was the first of nine Lehigh runners in the top 10. With the victory, the Mountain Hawks have now beaten Lafayette in 12 straight dual meets.
"The meet went according to plan," Lehigh men's coach Todd Etters said. "Our packs did a great job talking and pulling through the race. Every time we run, we want to make a statement. Today, we stuck together through the whole 8K and really made a team statement."
Freshman Jimmy Miller took second with a time of 26:53.6 and junior Evan Flach placed third with a 26:55.0 clip. Senior Andrew Jervis placed fifth, while senior Kyle O'Connor, freshman Tyler Mueller, junior Dan Soltan, senior Brian Herbst and freshman Russell Vignali rounded out spots six through 10, respectively.
After the race, Etters was pleased with how his team handled the course, which will also host the Patriot League Championship on October 30.
"This is the third time we've seen this course now between practice and in meets," Etters explained. "As much as you want to study it on paper, you really don't know it until you are actually out there. We understand that we're going to be right back here in a month and it's going to count for a lot more."
The Mountain Hawks will return to their home course on October 1 for the 37th-annual Brooks-Paul Short Run. The all-day event will open with collegiate races throughout the morning and high school competitions into the afternoon. Over 220 colleges and high schools are scheduled to compete.
