Redfern welcomes nine in class of 2014

Lehigh women's lacrosse welcomes nine newcomers to the program
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Head coach Jill Redfern has announced the newest additions to the Lehigh women's lacrosse program, which includes nine student-athletes from four states. The Class of 2013 includes Kate Cooper (Jenkintown, Pa.), Taylor Cummins (White Hall, Md.), Alexandra Fitzpatrick (Yorktown Heights, Md.), Gwen Gummersall (Wilmette, Ill.), Caitlin Keefe (Timonium, Md.), Chelsea Retaleato (West Babylon, N.Y.), Noelle Rogers (Babylon, N.Y.), Katherine Sullivan (Garden City, N.Y.) and Julie Tatios (West Chester, Pa.). The incoming group will look to help Lehigh improve on the successes of its 2010 which culminated in a Patriot League regular season championship.
"This class represents a diverse group of student-athletes who are united by their decision to join a team that has aspirations of elevating Lehigh Women's Lacrosse to the next level,” explained Redfern, the 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year, who enters her third season. “We expect them to make an immediate impact on our program and look forward to their arrival on campus in just a few weeks."
The first member of the Mountain Hawks class of 2014 is Kate Cooper, from Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. Cooper, who graduated from Abington Senior High School, can play in attack or the midfield. She served as captain of her high school team as a senior, and also earned the Coach's Award in the spring. An All-League and two-time Academic All-American selection, Cooper was earned the Gertrude E. Herzog Award as her school's most outstanding female athlete. Cooper lettered in the lacrosse and field hockey in high school participated in the Women's Lacrosse National Tournament in 2008 and 2009. Among her off-field accomplishments, Cooper earned the U.S. Marines Scholastic Leadership Award. She served on the executive board for the National Honor Society and was Vice President of the Varsity A Club.
A midfielder from White Hall, Maryland, Taylor Cummins comes to Lehigh from Hereford High School.
Cummins earned first team All-County and All-Region honors while leading her team in caused turnovers and ground balls. In each of her final two seasons, Cummins' high school team won the Baltimore County Championship and advanced to the regional finals. A co-captain in her senior season, Cummins also lettered in field hockey, and scored the only goal in the 2009 state championship game. She also played three years of basketball. A three-year member of the National Honor Society, Cummins plans to major in Engineering upon her arrival at Lehigh.
The lone goalkeeper in the incoming class, Alexandra Fitzpatrick arrives at Lehigh from Yorktown Heights, New York where she graduated from Lakeland High School. Fitzpatrick was a two-time All-American, a three-time All-League and two-time All-Section selection. She was named All-Elite on three occasions and led her high school team to four straight section titles. Fitzpatrick led her high school team to the state championship game in 2010 and won a state title in field hockey in 2009.
Gwen Gummersall comes to Lehigh from New Trier Township High School in Illinois. A two-time honorable mention All-American who plays on attack, Gummersall earned All-Conference and All-State honors in each of her final two seasons, and captained her high school team as a senior. Gummersall won a state championship as a sophomore in 2008 and her high school team was state runner-up in each of the last two seasons. Gummersall, who received Scholar-Athlete honors for her work in the classroom, also played three seasons of varsity tennis.
Caitlin Keefe is a midfielder from Notre Dame Prep in Timonium, Maryland where she was a two-year captain and led her team to back-to-back second place finishes in her league. A three-year varsity player, Keefe also played for the Baltimore Metro Team in two Women's National Tournaments. She also starred in field hockey where she was a captain and All-Conference performer. Keefe's accomplishments in the classroom were equally impressive, as she graduated with honors and was a member of national honor societies for science, Spanish and math.
Midfielder Chelsea Retaleato joins the Brown and White from West Babylon High School on Long Island. A three-year letter winner and two-year captain, Retaleato ranked among the top 25 in scoring on Long Island in 2010 with 50 goals and 41 assists. Retaleato earned All-County honors in 2009 and 2010 and was an Academic All-American in her senior season. A letter winner in volleyball and track, Retaleato was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Two-time Academic All-American Noelle Rogers comes to Lehigh from Babylon High School in New York. A three-year starter on the lacrosse field, Rogers was team captain her senior season, and earned All-Division laurels in 2009 and 2010. Rogers also played soccer and graduated in the top ten of her class with high honors. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was a part of honor societies for business, science and Spanish, while serving as Secretary of her class.
Katherine Sullivan comes to Lehigh from Garden City High School in New York. Sullivan, who plays defense, was a member of three New York State Championship Teams including her senior season in which Garden City went undefeated and was ranked second nationally by Laxpower. She was selected by U.S. Lacrosse to play in the 2010 Champion High School Showcase. A four-year member of the principals list, Sullivan also lettered in field hockey and won a state championship in 2009.
Rounding out the class of 2014 is Julie Tatios, a midfielder from Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, Pa. Tatios earned team MVP honors for Rustin High School as a senior and was also named Rustin's top Female Athlete of 2010. A two-time Academic All-American, Tatios was also a two-time first team All-Area selection in soccer.
The Mountain Hawks return six All-League selections for the 2011 season, including rising senior co-captains Lauren Dykstra and Allison Thomas. Dykstra has earned three different Patriot League major awards (Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year) in her first three seasons at Lehigh.
