BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Last month, Lehigh took some time to reflect on its 2009 season at the Eugene M. '35 and Harriet Henry Fall Sports Banquet, which was held on Sunday, January 17, at the University Center and was sponsored by the Lehigh Athletics Partnership. The Mountain Hawks enjoyed a successful 9-4-5 season that featured a season-opening win over Big XII member Nebraska plus an overtime triumph over NCAA tournament participant Monmouth and a 4-1 throttling of Patriot League Champion Colgate.
The end-of-season banquet featured reflections from former head coach Manny Oudin plus dinner and the presentation of awards to three members of the women’s soccer program.
Senior defender Hailey Coonrad captured the Athlete of the Year award, which is presented to the member of the team who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. A fifth year senior and three-year team captain, Coonrad earned All-Patriot League honors for the second time in 2009. Coonrad started all 18 games in central defense for the Mountain Hawks and anchored a defensive unit that pitched nine shutouts last season.
The Scholar-Athlete of the year award was presented to senior Natalie Hojnacki. This award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. A finance major, Hojnacki led the Mountain Hawks with a 3.79 grade point average in the fall and earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. On the pitch, Hojnacki led the Mountain Hawks in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points.
Junior Glynn Fitzer won the Coaches Award this year, which is awarded to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Fitzer started all 18 games in the midfield for the Mountain Hawks, finishing third on the team in scoring, while delivering a pair of game-winning goals. She is likely to take on a larger leadership role heading into her senior season.
