BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s record-breaking 2009-10 season was celebrated at the Charles F. ’38 and Helen Marie Zell women’s basketball banquet on Saturday April 10 in the University Center on the Asa Packer Campus. The evening included dinner, a highlight video remembering the championship season, a presentation of the four team awards and a reflection by the program’s three departing seniors.
One of the seniors that were honored at the banquet was Tricia Smith ‘09, who was named the Athlete of the Year. The Athlete of the Year award is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. Smith led the Mountain Hawks in rebounding (6.2) and finished her career fourth all-time in school history with 679. Smith is most notably known for her work on the defensive end of the floor, which includes holding the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, Michelle Kirk, to eight points on 2-for-16 shooting in the Patriot League championship game.
Junior Erica Prosser was honored for her work off the court and named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Scholar-Athlete award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. An Africana Studies major, Prosser carries a 3.57 cumulative GPA and is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Prosser, along with a few other Lehigh student-athletes, will head to Kenya this summer to help build a school as part of the national organization Student Athletes Leading Social Change. On the court Prosser led the Brown and White in scoring (13.7), assists (4.2) and steals (2.6).
Senior Alex Ross received the Coaches’ Award. The Coaches' Award is presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Ross finished her career as the most prolific three-pointer shooter in Patriot League and Lehigh history with 286. Ross’ three-pointers are often credited with energizing the team on both ends of the court.
The final award handed out was the Sixth Man Award, which is given to an individual or group of people who have made a major impact on the program. This year’s recipient was broadcaster Jeff Tourial. After finishing his ninth season as the voice of the Mountain Hawks, Tourial was noted for going above and beyond in his dedication to the program.
